Are you a biologist with a strong interest in statistics, applied bioinformatics, or computational biology? Do you want your research to directly contribute to improving the lives of people with cardiovascular disease, both today and in the future?

Job Description

You will join a well-established research line that integrates multi-omics data (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics) to unravel the pathophysiology and progression of heart failure. Working under the guidance of internationally recognized experts, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, nephrologists, epidemiologists, pharmacologists, and data scientists.

  • Analyzing and integrating large-scale omics datasets.
  • Supporting clinicians with data analysis for ongoing studies.
  • Developing, testing, and validating new algorithms and bioinformatics tools.
  • Optimizing and innovating existing high-throughput data analysis pipelines.
  • Publishing your findings in high-impact journals.
  • Collaborating with international partners, including opportunities for research visits and conference participation.

If you do not yet hold a PhD, we strongly encourage and support you to pursue a PhD trajectory within this position.

Working environment

Join the Department of Cardiology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) – a dynamic environment where cutting-edge research and clinical practice go hand in hand. We translate clinical challenges into scientific questions, and our discoveries feed back into patient care. At UMCG, we believe in creating space for talent to grow, and we are convinced that with the right people and tools, solutions can be found for every cardiovascular condition.

What do we need

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate who:

  • Holds a degree in biology, with a demonstrated interest in applied bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, or computer science.
  • Has experience with omics data analysis, integrative biology, or systems biology (an advantage, but not required).
  • Is skilled in at least one programming language (e.g., C++, Perl, Python, Java, R, or shell scripting) and familiar with relational databases.
  • Ideally has practical knowledge of open-source bioinformatics tools and biostatistics.
  • Is willing to travel abroad for training and collaborations.
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills in English (and preferably also Dutch).

What do we offer

  • A stimulating, international research environment with close links to clinical practice.
  • The opportunity to work with one of the largest multi-dimensional heart failure datasets worldwide (including phenotypical, genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data).
  • Mentorship from experienced researchers with a strong track record in grant acquisition (e.g., ERC, ZonMW).
  • A multidisciplinary team including clinicians, biologists, bioinformaticians, and data scientists.
  • Opportunities to lead projects, publish in high-impact journals, and present at international conferences.

Employment conditions:

  • Full-time contract for one year, with the possibility of extension up to four years.
  • Salary up to € 5.669 gross per month (scale 10 if you already hold a PhD), depending on education and experience (based on a full-time appointment). If you have not yet obtained your PhD, your salary will be up to €3,939 gross per month (PRO scale).
  • Additionally, the UMCG offers an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% year-end bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).

Application
Applications are processed on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is found. Please include in your application:

  • CV with the names and contact details of at least two references.
  • A short biosketch.
