Develop state-of-the-art avionics to enable high-tech drone missions!

About Avy

Avy pioneers unmanned aviation technology for emergency services and life-saving applications. We partner with innovative organizations that are among the first in the world to integrate long-range drone operations into their daily workflows.

We thrive on innovation, agility, and bold ideas, and we’ve developed a range of cutting-edge products that are ready to make an impact at scale. We’re an award-winning scale-up in the aviation industry. We pride ourselves on combining an innovative garage startup culture with being a professional and safety-minded aviation organisation

About the role

Avy builds autonomous VTOL drones that soar through the skies at 120 meters altitude and speeds of up to 140 km/h—faster than your average highway traffic. These high-tech marvels rely on a network of embedded systems that must work seamlessly together.

We are looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer to supercharge reliability and build new functionality into our drone fleet by developing advanced, robust avionics. You will contribute to Avy’s mission of building a BVLOS drone network that acts as an eye in the sky, while working on drone technology with real-world impact!

As part of the Embedded Systems team, you’ll design, develop, test, and maintain the electronic and computing subsystems across Avy’s products. That means designing PCBs, writing firmware, and making the cabling inside our flagship VTOL drone, which we call Aera. You will also be working on servos, motors, ESCs for propulsion, and on smart controllers and chargers for our autonomous docking stations. In short: if it has got wires or code, you will have a hand in making it work flawlessly!

You won’t just be seeing your designs from behind a desk at Avy; you get to see them fly!

Key responsibilities

  • Develop avionics by working with leading suppliers and designing electronics and hardware that go into our drones;
  • Debug, test, and validate PCBs, cables, and electrical subsystems to ensure reliability;
  • Optimize drone performance in terms of efficiency, power consumption, and robustness;
  • Develop and maintain C firmware for embedded systems by writing drivers for sensors, communication protocols, and control systems used in drones;
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and production engineers on drone avionics integration, manufacturing, and testing.

About you

You are a passionate, hardworking, hands-on Embedded Systems Engineer who has (at least) 3-5 years of work experience, ideally with a Bachelor's degree in Embedded Systems, Electronics, Computer Engineering, or a similar field. You are enthusiastic about drone technology and are eager to learn and contribute. It is a big plus if you have any hands-on experience building, flying, or working with UAV systems. You should be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced environment. You have strong problem-solving skills and pay attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Solid Experience with multi-layer PCB design and simulation (experience with Altium is a plus);
  • Experience and understanding of analog, digital, power, and motor control systems;
  • Experience with circuit design and integration of sensors, actuators, and microcontrollers;
  • Experience in debugging and troubleshooting embedded hardware and software;
  • Experience in writing bare metal C code, particularly for STM32 microcontrollers, with knowledge of peripherals such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, etc.

What we offer

  • 🚀 Impactful work: be part of a company using technology to save lives and drive sustainability
  • ⭐ Leading the drone revolution: work on advanced aerial systems projects that keep you on the front lines of innovation as we shape the future of drone technology
  • 💰Competitive salary ranging between € 3800 - € 4700 gross based on 40 hours work week, depending on the level of seniority
  • 🌴 Unlimited time off: take the time you need to recharge and stay at your best
  • 🏢 An inspiring office: work from our awesome space in Amsterdam, featuring a maker space, sauna, and great lunches!
  • 🎢 Startup experience: embrace the excitement, freedom, and fast growth of an ambitious tech startup
  • 🤝 A great culture: a warm and fun atmosphere with regular get-togethers, drinks, and celebrations plus a work environment built on trust, freedom, and learning from mistakes

EU citizenship or an EU work permit is required for this position (Avy does not offer relocation support).

Avy develops drone solutions for a better world. We work on use cases in nature conservation, medical delivery and first response. Our team consists of engineers, designers, business developers and operational masterminds. Avy is always looking for talent. We offer you a place where you can learn, fail, flourish, and excel. You will be part of a young, dynamic, professional and fast-growing organisation. And above all, you will be part of an amazing adventure!
