Use Go, Python & AI to help feed the world at Source.ag. We're hiring high-ownership engineers to build scalable systems on a modern AWS/Databricks stack.

Job description

About Source.ag: The Mission

At Source, we are on a mission to empower the world's growers with AI to sustainably feed a growing global population. The world’s leading growers use our SaaS products to optimize their operations, improve yields, and increase resource efficiency. We don't just sell software; we build deep partnerships with our customers to solve some of the most fundamental challenges in the global food supply chain.

This is not a typical software problem. We are modeling the complex, biological reality of a high-tech greenhouse and translating it into actionable intelligence. If you are excited by the challenge of using technology to solve real-world problems at a global scale, this is the place for you.

The Opportunity: What You'll Do

As a Software Engineer at Source, you will be a core contributor to the systems that power our AI-driven platform. You won't just be closing tickets; you will be building and scaling the infrastructure that turns complex data into critical decisions for our growers.

At our core, we are a data-intensive systems company solving real-world agricultural challenges. Our main technical challenge is to model the complex biological and operational reality of a high-tech greenhouse. This involves building robust systems to process diverse data streams—from IoT sensors to user-input from our iPad apps—and turning that data into actionable intelligence. You will be instrumental in designing, building, and scaling these critical systems.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable microservices primarily in Golang, with opportunities to work in Python on our ML/data-centric services.
  • Work with a modern, diverse data stack, including PostgreSQL, TimescaleDB, MongoDB, and our core analytics platform on Databricks.
  • Build robust, high-performance APIs using gRPC for internal communication and contribute to our GraphQL backend for frontend that serves our frontend.
  • Own your services from idea to production and beyond. You will write code, build tests, and deploy your services using our GitOps pipeline on AWS (ECS & Lambda).
  • Contribute to our architectural evolution. You will be a key voice in discussions around service boundaries, communication patterns, and best practices.
  • Collaborate across the stack. While your focus will be on the backend, you'll have opportunities to contribute to our frontend (React/Typescript) to help ship features end-to-end.

We believe you'll be successful if you:

  • Have a "Problem-First" Mindset: When faced with a request, your first instinct is to ask, "What is the underlying problem we are trying to solve?" You are driven to find the most efficient solution to the root cause.
  • Take High Ownership: You feel a deep sense of accountability for your work. You see projects through to completion and are proactive about identifying and fixing issues.
  • Are a Pragmatic Builder: You have a bias for action and know how to find the 80/20 solution to deliver value quickly without sacrificing quality. You have a strong sense of what it takes to build and operate real-world systems.
  • Think in Systems: You don't just see your service; you see how it fits into the broader architecture. You can reason about dependencies, data flows, and the impact of your changes.
  • Communicate with Clarity: You can articulate complex technical ideas simply and directly, both in writing (docs, code comments) and in person.

Our Way of Working

We are a high-performance team on a mission to solve a massive global challenge. This means we move fast, embrace change, and are constantly learning. Our environment is for builders who thrive on autonomy and are energized by seeing their work create a direct impact. We value velocity and pragmatism over bureaucracy. If you are driven by learning, taking ownership, and want to be part of a team where your contributions truly matter, you will find a home here.

AI at Source: How We Build

AI is core to how we operate and what we build. We equip our engineers with the best tools available, like Cursor and OpenAI Codex, to accelerate development. If you are excited by the opportunity to apply modern AI and LLMs to a unique, real-world dataset to solve complex problems, you will be right at home here.

If you are a builder who wants to make a tangible impact on a global scale and are excited by the challenge of solving hard problems, we would love to hear from you.

Job requirements

Your Experience:

  • Proven relevant work experience in building, deploying, and operating backend services in a production environment (typically 4+ years).
  • Strong proficiency in Golang and/or Python.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and a deep appreciation for clean, reproducible development environments.
  • Experience with relational databases (like PostgreSQL) and an understanding of how to model data effectively.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.
  • Preferred start date September 1 or earlier

Our Tech Stack:

  • Backend: Golang, Python
  • Frontend: Typescript, React, Next.js
  • Communication: gRPC, GraphQL, REST, AWS EventBridge/SNS/SQS
  • Data: Databricks, Delta Lake, S3, PostgreSQL (RDS), TimescaleDB, MongoDB Atlas
  • Infrastructure: AWS (ECS, Lambda), Docker, Vercel
  • Monitoring: Datadog

Our offer in return for your talent and skills

  • A hybrid work environment - we have working days at the office on Mondays and Thursdays
  • Paid lunch
  • Pension contribution of 4.5%
  • Mental well-being guidance through OpenUp
  • Macbook Pro 16”
  • Travel allowance for office commute
  • Annual learning budget of € 1,000
  • Work from home budget of € 550
  • Monthly wifi & phone plan reimbursement of €50
  • Unlimited holidays and we expect you at least to take 25 per year
  • Each quarter we have a big company event that includes dinner and special activities

At Source, we highly value diversity of backgrounds and thoughts. Research has shown that people make different internal assessments of whether they are a good fit for the job. We therefore highly encourage you to apply for this job, even if you feel you might not 'tick all the boxes!

Source is creating a sustainable and fair food system by accelerating the transition to greenhouse agriculture. We are making greenhouses more scalable by developing the world’s most advanced artificial grower that acts as a co- & autopilot for farmers and growers. Our software and AI models help growers to define optimal seasonal crop plans and provide greenhouse autopilot functionality to ensure flawless daily growing operations.
