Computer science | Data science internship: optimization & control algorithms

Introduction

ASML brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster and energy-efficient microchips. Business Line Applications (BL Apps) extends our holistic lithography solutions by developing products that work alongside our lithography systems to help them perform better and improve the patterning process. We design, develop, integrate, market and service application products, which enable our customers - the world’s leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. On Product Alignment department in BL APPS is focusing on alignment control products.

Your assignment

Wafer alignment is an integral process in semiconductor manufacturing by which the wafer position is precisely adjusted using measurements of alignment marks. During life of a wafer, the alignment sensor in the scanner see the whole evolution from bare wafer to the final fully processed wafer with chips. To have precise control of the process, several models and algorithms have been developed. We're looking for an enthusiastic functional test Engineering Intern to support testing and validation of these models and algorithms. After the internship you'll gain deep experience in testing and refining optimization code, mentorship from experts in models and mathematical algorithms and exposure to real-world engineering workflows and tools.

What you will be working on:

  • Develop test plan specifications with user-centered test scenarios.
  • Generate appropriate test datasets and simulation outputs from the system/application under test.
  • Write and maintain test code in a structured MATLAB testing framework.
  • Refactor and modularize algorithm code using standard coding practices.
  • Execute test plans and create clear, data-driven test analysis reports.
  • Use version control systems and code reviews to uphold code quality.
  • Collaborate with experts for deep dives, debugging, and issue resolution.

Your profile

To be a great match for this internship you:

  • Are a (HBO) bachelor or master student in Data Science, Computer Science or a related field looking for an apprentice internship.
  • Have experience in MATLAB and preferably also Julia.
  • Have good mathematical skills.
  • Are someone that is flexible, result-driven with an eagerness to learn. You are able to work independently and autonomously.
  • Have strong communication skills and are fluent in English (verbal and written).

This is a (HBO) bachelor or master apprentice internship for a minimum of 6 months, for 4 to 5 days per week (at least 3 days onsite). The start date of this internship is September 2025.

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
