About us

Hop aboard Damen Naval; the naval division of the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group, where 12,000 professionals work worldwide. Damen Naval delivers advanced naval vessels to clients all over the globe. By implementing the most innovative technological developments in practice, we continue to push the boundaries of the shipbuilding industry. You can be part of our team! Are you ready for duty?

The role

As the Proposal Lead Electrical & Automation (E&A) at Damen Naval’s Proposals department, you will be responsible for the conceptual and contract design of electrical and automation systems (e.g. power generation and distribution, propulsion, platform automation, cable installations, navigation systems etc.) for our state-of-the-art naval vessels while complying with all requirements and regulations. Working as the E&A Proposal Lead in a multidisciplinary tender team, you come up with innovative electrical & automation design solutions as part of a commercially viable and attractive proposition. Combining and leveraging your excellent numerical insights and writing skills, you are able to substantiate your figures and solutions in a compelling and convincing document, set to win over the customer. After a successful tender, you are responsible for a smooth transition of your work towards our engineering department for detailed engineering and realization. As the Damen Naval E&A Engineering teams are located in Vlissingen and Schiedam, you need to be available for frequent travel to both office locations. The official job title for this position is Proposal Engineer Electrical & Automation.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Act as the primary focal point for Electrical & Automation matters in the Tender project team.
  • Lead a project team of Electrical & Automation Tender Engineers.
  • Define general system architectures (Single Line Diagram, Automation Architecture), weight, power and cost estimations, electrical load balances and (propulsion) system configurations as part of the design and tender package.
  • Contribute to requirements analysis, draft electrical & automation engineering specifications, and support subcontractor quotation requests and evaluations, for the purposes of preliminary equipment selection and budget allocation.
  • Evaluate designs against requirements and prepare corresponding reports.
  • Write technical documents, contract specifications, and reports, effectively communicating complex concepts and data to customers and subcontractors.
  • Participate in discussions with customers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders on technical and commercial aspects of proposed solutions.
  • Support cost evaluations provided by subcontractors and internal stakeholders.

Skills & experience

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in electrical design concepts and practices, preferably in complex maritime (tender) projects.
  • Lead a small project team of engineers.
  • Excellent writing skills, able to deliver compelling text, figures and calculations encompassing very specific technical details and specifications.
  • A commercial mind-set to deliver viable yet attractive technical and financial forecasts and propositions.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Excellent command of the English language both written and verbal, preferably also Dutch. Willingness to learn Dutch is a job requirement.
  • Willingness to travel abroad occasionally.
  • Willingness to regularly travel to Vlissingen and Schiedam office locations.
  • Excellent references, as a security screening is part of the hiring process.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with EU (work) visa or with both an EU and non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.
