Internship | Retinal Imaging Artefact Correction

About this position

Retinal images often suffer from a Central Light Reflex (CLR), a bright streak of light along the centre of blood vessels caused by differences in refractive indices in the vessel wall. Since the retinal vasculature is a key biomarker for various eye and cardiovascular diseases, understanding and correcting the CLR is essential for accurate diagnosis. The aim of this internship project is to reconstruct the CLR-free signal, based on CLR data. You will learn about photon simulation, algorithm development, artificial intelligence, and retinal image processing.

What will be your role?

Are you interested in medical imaging and AI? Then this internship project might be the right fit!
There is room for flexibility in the project, depending on your findings and interests. However, we anticipate the following general steps:

• Simulations: Use Monte Carlo simulations to generate synthetic retinal images with and without CLR. Parameters such as vessel diameter, depth, and melanin concentration will be varied to study their impact on CLR.
• Signal Reconstruction: Develop methods to reconstruct the signal without CRL from the CLR data. This will involve both analytical modelling and AI-based approaches on the simulation data.
• Artefact correction: Apply the developed methods to in vivo retinal images to remove the CLR.

What we expect from you

• MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Physics, Mathematics or other related field.
• Experience with programming (Python).
• Some experience with AI.
