Internship | Semantic Interoperability in Collaborative Networks

About this position

TNO is an independent research and technology organization. We are a team specializing in semantic interoperability between organizations, particularly within Collaborative Network Organisations (CNOs) – networks of legally independent organisations collaborating towards common goals. We advise CNOs, contribute to the development of standards for effective data exchange, and build specialized tooling to support the governance of shared semantic assets. There are many assignment possibilities of which we are all ready provide two: The student is invited to decide their own direction, which is an important part of working at TNO.

What will be your role?

Designing Observability Framework for Data Spaces:
Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) and other bodies governing semantic assets invest a lot of effort in creating and maintaining common data models and standards. But they often lack empirical data on how these standards are actually used in real-world data exchanges. Decisions on evolving standards (e.g., changes, deprecations, extensions) rely heavily on indirect feedback (workshops, consultations), which are costly and time-consuming, and provide incomplete information. The emerging European paradigm of Data Spaces, which are decentralized architectures for controlled data sharing, combined with concepts from software 'Observability' (monitoring system internals via telemetry like logs, metrics, traces) offers a potential solution. Can we design a way to observe metadata patterns of data exchange within Data Spaces to provide SDOs with evidence-based insights? GenAI for Semantic Interoperability in Collaborative Networks: Achieving semantic interoperability in CNOs remains a challenge. It often requires complex standards, mappings, and governance processes (see BOMOS). Generative AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), demonstrates remarkable capabilities in understanding, generating, and translating human language and code. This technology holds immense potential to enhance or even transform how organizations achieve semantic agreement and data exchange. However, as applied researchers in this field, we risk suffering from the 'horseless carriage' syndrome, i.e. merely automating old processes with new technology instead of using its unique capabilities for fundamentally better approaches. How can GenAI truly advance semantic interoperability, and what are the implications for existing practices and governance, and the assumptions on which these have been built?

What we expect from you

  • Student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Business & IT, or a related field with a strong technical background.
  • Interest in data architectures, distributed systems, APIs, metadata, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about Data Spaces concepts.
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, Java) are beneficial, especially in case of the PoC option.

Analytical mindset and problem-solving skills.

What you'll get in return

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
