The role

As Design Engineer Naval Architecture, you will play a crucial role in ship design and the delivery of the tender package at Damen Naval. You will be responsible for developing naval architecture design solutions into a set of requirements during precontract activities in the Proposals department. You understand the balances that make a ship realize its goals, stability, strength, resistance, motions, arrangements and survivability. Working within the technical team of a tender, you will collaborate closely with the Tender Manager, Proposal Engineer, Draftsman and Manager Naval, Structures & Outfitting and the other departments to support the technical definition of Damen Naval offers. Your role will be instrumental realizing the best overall design solution for our naval projects.

Key accountabilities

  • Perform design and development activities.
  • Contribute to and execute requirements analysis, concept generation, general arrangement design, weight estimations, stability calculations, resistance and propulsion calculations, and main ship balances.
  • Evaluate new (sub)concepts and takes care of corresponding reporting.
  • Write technical documents, specifications for equipment, contract specifications, reports, and make presentations to visualize the calculations, concepts, and the reporting data.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication with all relevant stakeholders so that input can be included in the specialized calculations.
  • Liaise with internal departments for optimized project results.

Skills & experience

  • Master or bachelor degree in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical study.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in a variety of design concepts and practices.
  • Experience in technologically advanced design & proposal processes and in the design and integration of combat systems, preferably in complex new built naval ships.
  • Good command of the English and preferably also Dutch language both written and verbal.
  • Excellent references, as a security screening is part of the hiring process.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with EU (work) visa or with (also) a non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible given the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.

  • A competitive salary and 8% holiday pay.

  • Travel allowance of 23 cents per kilometre.
  • PME-pension arrangement with an employer contribution of 60%.
