PhD Position on Positive Tipping Points in Technological Innovation for the Clean Energy Transition

Study how technological innovation drives positive tipping points in the green economy by advancing climate-economic models to support policymakers in accelerating sustainable energy transitions.

Job description

Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) shape the current discussion on the global response to climate change by providing support to policymaking with their combined representation of natural-human systems. Although ever-improving, these models still overlook important feedback loops related to technological change, which can either reinforce lock-ins to unsustainable patterns or accelerate the transition towards a green economy. The successful candidate will develop a dedicated IAM module to study the emergence of technological tipping points, such as rapid cost reductions or large-scale diffusion of green energy technologies, under varying policy, socio-economic and technological progress scenarios. Key tasks include designing and implementing an endogenous technological change module featuring tipping points, identifying key uncertainties, coupling the module within existing IAMs, and analyzing tipping point dynamics. The research will eventually focus on crucial levers — such as R&D investments, economies of scale, and learning-by-doing — that can catalyze accelerated transitions in sectors like power, storage, transport, industry, and buildings.

As part of the ERC RIPPLE project, you will join a dynamic research environment within the Policy Analysis section of the Multi-Actor Systems department. Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team, you will leverage expertise in simulation, optimization, and data-driven techniques for policy analysis. You will also have contact with a strong network focused on climate under the Climate Action Programme, and specifically the Climate Governance theme. Your supervisor will be Professor Giacomo Marangoni, PI of the RIPPLE project.

Job requirements

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field, e.g., Engineering, Policy Analysis, Economics, Environmental Science, Computer Science.
  • Demonstrable affinity and strong interest in computational modelling, systems thinking, sustainability and/or climate-related challenges.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language used for scientific or analytical purposes, e.g. Python.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal. For more information about English requirements, please see: https://www.tudelft.nl/onderwijs/opleidingen/phd/admission
  • A curiosity-driven mindset and a passion for doing research.
