Physics | Biomedical Engineering internship: experimental vapour phase lubrication

Introduction

The Tribology and Electrostatics research group of ASML looks into the long-term solution roadmap for ASML. For this purpose, we explore various technological solutions that are not mature yet. Vapour phase lubrication is one of those potential technologies that could be applied in a multitude of locations in our machine. This is an experimental investigation into this technology.

Your Assignment

Friction between moving components in the ASML lithography machines is a big problem. It leads to wear and tear of machine parts reducing their lifetimes. By applying a monolayer of lubricants between moving parts, we would like to manipulate friction to our advantage. This internship will be an experimental assignment. You will determine how effective a molecular layer is in reducing the wear and increasing the lifetime of our scanner components.

For this assignment, your tasks will include:

  • Perform a literature study;
  • Perform Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) measurements;
  • Work with a custom build vapor-phase setup, characterize it, and make upgrades;
  • Identify molecules beneficial for friction performance;
  • Perform lubrication experiments from vapor phase;
  • Analyze AFM topography and friction data;
  • Report and present your conclusions and recommendations.

This is a Master apprentice/graduation internship for 5 days a week with a duration of 6 to 9 months. The start date is as soon as possible, or the latest around September.

Your profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

  • Are a Master student with a background in Physics, Tribology, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering;
  • Have experience in performing experiments;
    Are enthusiastic to be part of a fun multi-disciplinary team;
  • Are familiar with MATLAB;
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.

Diversity and inclusion
