Symposium: A day on Kleverlands

Discovering and uncovering Cleverlandish

Cleverlandish, also known as Kleverlands in Dutch, is a dialect continuum within the Low-Franconian speaking area. Its geographical extension goes beyond national borders, as it stretches westwards in the Netherlands, particularly the easternmost parts of South Gelderland and Brabant, and the northernmost part of Limburg; and eastwards all the way to the city of Duisburg in North Rhine Westphalia. Some language varieties, especially the city dialect of Nijmegen, Nimweegs, but also Gruusbeeks, Ernems, Gendts, Millings, Genneps, Cuijks, Kleefs, Xantens, Düsbergsch, have all sparked peoples’ interest, both within and outside academia. Time has come to bring all these insights together and convene to celebrate and disentangle this diversity.

Abstracts

Georg Cornelissen “Ins efkes kie:ke” – het Kleverlands anno 1900 en in het jaar 2025

Een zinnetje als “ins efkes kie:ke” kon je rond het jaar 1900 overal in de streek tussen Nijmegen en Duisburg (D) horen. Het dialectlandschap vormde toen een grensoverschrijdend continuüm. Én het dialect was de belangrijkste taal als “gewone” Nederlanders en Duitsers elkaar ontmoetten. Nu, 125 jaar later, is het aantal dialectsprekers stevig gedaald, “tussenvormen” tussen standaardtaal (Nederlands resp. Duits) en dialect spelen een grotere rol, al zijn er (nagenoeg) overal nog mensen die “komt ins efkes kie:ke” zeggen als er iets te bekijken is. Deze lezing bekijkt de rol van het Kleverlands de afgelopen 125 jaar.

Christian Schramm & Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia “Motten ze dan!”: The place of Ernems in the communicative landscape of Arnhem

The Ernems city dialect from Arnhem is an endangered languoid variety that has received little attention from linguists. Its contemporary existence has also come under question, with some suggestions that it is no longer used, even in its neighbourhood of origin, Klarendal (Berns 2002). This presentation outlines the findings of linguistic landscaping and field work into Ernems’ usage in Arnhem and at Vitesse Arnhem Football Club (Vitesse), with the aim to contextualise how Ernems fits into the modern-day communicative landscape of the city. Argument will be made towards Ernems’ evolution from city dialect to ‘voetballect’, whereby its usage at Vitesse is more noticeable than in the cityscape of Arnhem. This will highlight how Vitesse is not only an important cultural institution within the city of Arnhem, but also a vital outlet for dialect speakers to use their language in a dynamic manner. Findings from archival research, as well as an interview with an Ernems speaker, will also present the idea that Ernems, although still not officially classified as Kleverlands, should be recognised as an important part of this diverse dialect continuum.

Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia “Nuir de bierrebieskes gaon? Nie, jongu!”

The communicative place of Nimweegs in the linguistic landscape of Nijmegen Nimwèègs is a Low Frankish languoid, spoken in the city of Nijmegen, in particular in the so-called Onderstad, the Waterkwartier, and the Willemskwartier by the descendants of an early twentieth century working class that settled in the city centre in the dawning of local industrialisation and urbanisation. The birth of the dialect of Nijmegen seems to be related to two particular situations: the isolation of the Benedenstad (van Hout, 1989, p. 40), and the emergence of a sense of city identity. According to van Hout, due to the isolation of the Benedenstad, the real Nimwèègs or the so-called ‘echte platte Nimweegs’ was not under the influence of the standard language. This, of course, has radically changed over the last fifty years. This talk explores Nimweegs from three perspectives: traditional sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics (ethnography and linguistic landscaping), and grief studies. Currently, Nimweegs seems to have become a lect specifically used for ceremonial purposes, e.g. Nimweegs dictée or NEC football matches. In addition, its current obsolescence seems to be the product of gentrification and the subsequent minoritisation of local inhabitants, Nimwegenuiren, hence leading to a comparable linguistic ecology to that found in the postcolonial Global South.

Herman Giesbers en Sjaak Kroon Het Gennepse Kleverlands: een realistisch perspectief op de toekomst

In onze bijdrage schetsen we de positie van het Kleverlands in de gemeente Gennep (Gennep, Heijen, Milsbeek, Ottersum, Ven-Zelderheide) vanuit vier perspectieven en we besluiten met een vooruitblik en een voorstel tot nader onderzoek. Naar onze mening biedt de Gennepse taalsituatie aanknopingspunten voor een bredere discussie over het Kleverlands in ten minste het Kleverlandse gebied in Nederland. We beginnen met een afbakening van het Genneps in het Kleverlandse dialectlandschap, waaruit blijkt dat het Genneps meer aansluit bij het aangrenzende Land van Cuijk en de regio Kleef dan bij de zuidelijker gelegen Kleverlandse gebieden (Well, Horst, Venray, Venlo). Vervolgens schetsen we de ontwikkelingen in het – afnemende – gebruik van het dialect op basis van onderzoeksgegevens uit de jaren 60, 70 en 80. We laten dan zien hoe deze sociolinguïstische ontwikkeling van invloed is op de kennis en de beheersing van het dialect als taalsysteem aan de hand van enkele casussen. Tot slot geven we een beeld van hoe de publicatie van ons herziene dialectwoordenboek en bijbehorende activiteiten leiden tot een nieuwe dynamiek in het denken over en het waarderen van het dialect. We sluiten af met het presenteren van toekomstige onderzoeksactiviteiten en andere plannen voor hoe om te gaan met de hedendaagse situatie van het Kleverlands in de gemeente Gennep, bijvoorbeeld in het onderwijs.

Harm Botterblom “Gij bun ver van huus”: analyzing Kleverlandish features within the Gendts dialect

In this study, the usage of two Kleverlandish linguistic features is analyzed diachronically in the Gendts dialect, a village situated northeast of Nijmegen. Dialect recordings from the 1960's and from the present day will be statistically compared for their frequency of monophthongization and the usage of gij/ge/gullie pronouns (Kleverlandish features) and the frequency of the opposite (Standard Dutch) features. The aim of this study is to develop a more precise overview of the Gendts dialect and its place in the Kleverlandish dialect region, as well as to observe if there is reason to assume that Standard Dutch features are becoming more prevalent in today's usage of Gendts.

Haike Jacobs Verkleinwoordvorming in het Limburgs en Kleverlands

Als je vanaf Vaals in het zuiden van Limburg langs de Duitse grens naar het noorden van Limburg gaat, dan passeer je onderweg drie taalvariëteiten: het Ripuarisch, het Franconisch en het Kleverlands. In deze lezing gaan we nader in op de verkleinwoordvorming op een aantal plaatsen die we onderweg tegenkomen: Vaals, Kerkrade, Brunsum, Sittard, Panningen, Venlo, Afferden en tot net over de Limburges grens Groesbeek en gaan we in op de vraag hoe en wanneer men kan zien in welke variëteit terecht te zijn beland?
