How do you make our customers happy?

By enabling 3,000 bol colleagues to do their best work through seamless technology integration. While most of our 700+ IT specialists focus on serving 13.5 million customers and 49,000 partners, you’ll manage and optimize the infrastructure that empowers our colleagues. Every API you connect and every interface you build helps teams work more efficiently and pleasurably. Can you transform workplace tech into employee delight?

The biggest challenge

Building internal systems calls for a mix of technical skills and user empathy. While we leverage many of the same advanced technologies as customer-facing product teams, internal users have different needs and expectations. You’ll need to integrate third-party SAAS applications seamlessly while maintaining a secure and scalable environment. The real challenge? Creating solutions that are both technically robust and simple to understand and use.

What you'll do as Software Engineer Office Automation

You’ll join our Office Automation team, working closely with People& (HR) and other functional administrators, our Product Manager, and IT Security. Your mission is to build secure and scalable interfaces and APIs to integrate a diverse ecosystem of internal applications. While you’ll follow bol’s software development standards – we’ll gladly get you up to speed – you’ll have significant autonomy to make technical decisions.

Our “you build it, you run it, you love it” philosophy means you’ll own your solutions end-to-end. This includes development, monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement. You’ll work with a modern tech stack, including Kotlin, Java 21, Spring, PostgreSQL, Angular, and Google Cloud services running on Kubernetes. In addition to coding, you’ll team up with internal stakeholders to learn their needs and design solutions that make their work easier and – always a bonus – more pleasant. Key responsibilities:

  • Design and develop clean, secure integrations between internal systems
  • Create scalable, future-proof workplace automation solutions
  • Support functional managers in tool selection and implementation
  • Experiment with and vet new technologies for our internal stack
  • Maintain and improve existing integrations and applications
  • Ensure high availability and performance of internal systems

Why you can make a difference

Because you combine technical expertise with a strong internal service focus. With 5+ years of software engineering experience, you understand the difference between adequate and outstanding applications. Your experience with modern development practices and cloud technologies allows you to build robust, scalable solutions. Most importantly, you consider internal tools critical enablers of organizational success and feel at home in (the more, the merrier) Kotlin, Java 21, Spring, PostgreSQL, Angular, Google Cloud (BigQuery, Storage), Kubernetes, GitLab CI, Maven, and/or React!

  • Action list aficionado You prefer following detailed instructions to charting your own technical course
  • Stakeholder averse You can guess what colleagues need; there’s no need to ask them
  • "It worked on my machine" The user experience is not your key concern
  • Attention to detail You give internal tools the same TLC as any customer-facing product
  • Integration innovator ‘Messing’ with new APIs and unknown integrations awakens the thrill-seeker in you
  • Proud owner You thrive on ownership and love seeing your solutions make colleagues' lives easier

This is where you'll work

You’ll join our Office Automation team, where you’ll collaborate with passionate engineers and internal stakeholders to create the digital workplace of the future. You’ll be part of bol’s broader technical community of 700+ IT professionals, working in an environment that values autonomous teams and continuous learning. While your focus is internal, your impact ripples through the organization and noticeably helps us better serve customers. We’ve been reinventing retail since 1999, and with your help, we’ll reinvent how we work.
