How do you make our customers happy?

By creating a frictionless cloud experience for our engineering teams. As part of Team Hammer, you’ll develop, maintain, and occasionally redesign the provisioning product our application teams use to deploy to Google Cloud Platform in accordance with bol security policies and compliance standards. This mission-critical tooling enables hundreds of engineers to manage their cloud infrastructure efficiently, freeing them to focus on building features for our 13.5 million customers. As such, you directly impact developer productivity, application security, and, ultimately, the stability of services our customers rely on.

The biggest challenge

Modernizing our existing provisioning API while maintaining service stability. We’re embarking on an ambitious journey to minimize complexity, dependencies, and maintenance effort. Sometimes, thinner really is better! To succeed, you must excel at innovating and practical execution while continuously facilitating our application teams. You’ll need to navigate the tension between legacy systems and modern approaches, making thoughtful decisions that improve developer experience without disrupting critical workflows. How can we evolve our platform using industry-standard tools while ensuring a smooth transition for teams that depend on our services?

What you'll do as Cloud Infra Engineer

As a member of Team Hammer, you’ll play a key role in transforming how bol engineers interact with our cloud infrastructure. Our primary product is R2D2, an in-house tool that enables application teams to deploy infrastructure to GCP while respecting constraints pertaining to personally identifiable information (‘PII’), financial data, and network and security policies. You’ll help us modernize this in-house tool, making it more lightweight and scalable, and better aligning it with industry standards.

You’ll collaborate on redesigning the provisioning system’s user interface. Currently, teams use our custom-developed DSL (Domain Specific Language), and we’re eager to make this simpler and more intuitive. Working with cutting-edge cloud technologies, you’ll leverage Kubernetes Config Connector, etc., to provision resources in Google Cloud Platform. As part of our support rotation, you’ll troubleshoot issues for application teams, ensuring that bugs and errors get prompt attention and are quickly resolved. This direct interaction with internal customers provides valuable insights that inform our product development. Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the modernization (‘leaner and meaner’) of our provisioning API
  • Helping design and implement an improved UI for infrastructure deployment
  • Working with Kubernetes and GCP to provision secure, compliant cloud resources
  • Supporting application teams by resolving infrastructure issues
  • Participating in code reviews and ensuring high-quality implementations
  • Testing solutions thoroughly before production deployment

Why you can make a difference

You combine proven technical skills with a passion for creating developer-friendly tools. Your experience with Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and cloud platforms (preferably GCP) helps you understand our current challenges and envision better solutions. You appreciate the importance of security and compliance in infrastructure provisioning and can balance these requirements with usability. You have high standards for your work, recognizing that your code powers critical systems that teams across bol depend on daily.

  • Quick-fix fan You prefer rapid solutions over sustainable ones and tend to nod off during the testing and code review phases
  • Cloud novice Concepts like IAM, networking, and container orchestration in public cloud environments are mostly unfamiliar
  • Solo sailor You'd rather work independently than collaborate with teammates on complex technical challenges
  • Kubernetes enthusiast You're excited about the Kubernetes ecosystem and have hands-on experience deploying and managing workloads in this environment
  • Configuration management connoisseur Tools like Terraform, Kubernetes Config Connector, Ansible, Puppet, and Open Policy Agent are familiar territory, and you can elaborate on their strengths and limitations
  • Quality craftsperson You take pride in your work and invest time in thoughtful designs, thorough code reviews, and comprehensive testing before shipping to production

Where you'll work

You’ll join Team Hammer, a group of seven enthusiastic professionals: five platform engineers, a group product manager, and an engineering manager. The team brings together international talent from South Africa, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Turkey, with most members skewing toward the senior end of the experience spectrum. Many colleagues have been with bol for years, developing deep expertise in Platform Engineering and DevOps, and we’re all happy to share our knowledge! The environment balances technical excellence with practical problem-solving—we’re cognizant that we’re a critical enabler for bol’s engineering organization and take our work seriously, but we approach challenges with creativity and collaboration. With a team culture that values both innovation and reliability, you’ll find opportunities to contribute to meaningful work that powers the infrastructure supporting 13.5 million customer experiences.
