Model Risk Management Specialist

Do you believe in the power of data? Or are you an expert on regulation and guidelines of the European Central Bank (ECB) and European Banking Authority (EBA) or do you enjoy assessing the functioning of models? Then this position is for you! Based in Utrecht, you’ll work for a bank that puts people first. Because at de Volksbank, we invest in a better world.

As our Model Risk Management Specialist, you will be part of our Model Risk Management (MRM) team and use your expert skills to help over 3 million clients. You will be engaged in various Credit Risk Control Unit (CRCU), Model Risk Governance & Oversight and Model Validation responsibilities. In this role, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a robust model risk management framework, ensuring the effective identification, measurement, monitoring, and control of model risks, as well as assessing the development and performance of the models of de Volksbank.

In this position, you will translate current and proposed relevant regulatory requirements such as CRR, ECB and EBA Guidelines and Basel principles into policies, standards and procedures a modeller can use in developing compliant models. You’ll monitor regulatory compliance and report to senior management. As a MRM specialist, you will be a natural problem solver and actively involved in model development, review and implementation. In addition, you’ll monitor changes to the rating system and facilitate the ECB notifications. You’ll provide an independent assessment of the quality, suitability and use of de Volksbank’s models. Based on this, you’ll advise senior management and developers on possible improvements and model usage.

You’ll play a pivotal part in connecting the 1st and 2nd lines of defence. As a connector, you’ll stimulate knowledge sharing between Model Risk Governance & Oversight, Model Validation and Model Development, in constant contact with the Joint Supervisory Team, internal and external auditors. With so much variety on offer, you’ll always be challenged in this role.

Your responsibilities:

  • You contribute to interpretation of CRR, ECB, EBA and IFRS9 regulations and translating these into requirements for policies and standards;
  • You participate in projects to close ECB obligations and other deficiencies;
  • You are actively engaged in model development, review, implementation and application;
  • You perform quantitative statistical analyses and assess the use of a broad spectrum of models;
  • You convert your insights into clear and concise reports in which you present the model risk to senior management;
  • You facilitate further improvement in model risk management;
  • You advise in the decision making process and review the quality of project deliverables.

About your team
Model Risk Management is a team with highly skilled and enthusiastic colleagues. We help each other to be successful and value you as person. We challenge each other, we work pro-actively together, we make things happen and we do what we promise!

Everybody has her/his own talent and you are stimulated to use it as much as possible. There is room for team and personal development. As MRM, we keep in touch with everybody by means of coffee breaks, digital team events and mentorship for new joiners. We are working from the office, but also appreciate the benefits from working at home. De Volksbank has a warm and inclusive culture, colleagues are approachable and helpful. You may quickly have significant responsibilities, and therefore you will be able to make an impact to the organization.

Your competencies
Known for your analytical skills, you have a deep love for data as well as complex regulations and guidelines. You enjoy working with numbers and have a knack for digging to the very bottom of the data mine to uncover valuable insights. While you can work independently, you also function well in a team environment. Gifted with a helicopter view, you can connect the dots and convince others of your findings.

Furthermore, you have:

  • A MSc degree or its equivalent with a quantitative background such as Mathematics, Econometrics, Finance, Economics, or related fields.
  • Knowledge and experience with legislation and regulations in the field of credit risk, capital and A-IRB models. You are familiar with CRR and the regulatory frameworks of Basel, ECB, EBA and IFRS9, among others.
  • Experience in model risk management, quantitative modelling, model development, CRCU function and/or model validation.
  • Affinity with and/or experience with programming and analyzing large datasets.

Please note: it is important for this position that you have good command of the English language, both written and spoken, as our professional output is in English.

To be sure if you are legally allowed to perform work in the Netherlands for de Volksbank, you must meet the follow conditions: a valid work permit, a home address in the Netherlands and a social security number. Unfortunately we do not support relocation activities.
