Join Our Team as a Developer at KNAW Humanities Cluster

Are you the Developer who is able to jump into existing applications and make sense of it? Are you able to transform and/or improve those applications? Do you find it a challenge to work within a team and working together with other teams of the KNAW to find solutions to complex issues? Is ensuring security and stability within the infrastructure self-evident to you? Then we are looking for you.

The Digital Infrastructure department at the KNAW Humanities Cluster in Amsterdam is looking for a Developer, 38 hours per week (1.0 FTE).

Job description

  • We are looking to strengthen our dev/ops team. We design and build or use open-source software and share information about our digital infrastructure. The goal is to be and stay flexible with the infrastructure without losing sight for the long term.
  • We are saving and serve a lot of (heritage) data for the public domain and our academic colleagues within the humanities and social sciences to address new research questions using innovative new technical methods.
  • You will be working on a broad spectrum of applications for the short and long term.
  • You will improve existing HuC software that supports the overview of our landscape of applications.
  • Also, you will be working on migrating legacy applications to an application which meets the standards of today.
  • If needed, you will support other expertise-teams within the department.

Skills we are looking for:

  • Worked with Linux
  • Worked with Apache/Nginx
  • Worked with e.g. Bash, Html, CSS
  • Worked with Docker, CI/CD, git, Docker-registries, docker-compose
  • Worked with range of DBMSs, e.g., PostgreSQL, MariaDB, SQlite
  • In depth knowledge of PHP (LAMP/LAPP stack)
  • Knowledge of javascript e.g. jquery
  • Other things that are useful; Laravel, Kubernetes, MacOSx, webhosting platforms, Wordpress/Drupal/other CMS, node-js, varnish
  • Fluency in English (Understanding of the Dutch Language is appreciated)

In return, we can provide:

The appointment at the HuC Digital Infrastructure department is for 38 hours a week for an initial period of 12-month contract. Depending on your qualifications and experience, the salary amounts to at least € 2.960,00 and € 4.670,00 (scale 10, CAO NU) or € 3.974,00 and € 5.439,00 gross per month (scale 11, CAO NU) for full-time employment. This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP. The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits. A package that meets the different needs of employees depending on their stage of life, lifestyle or career ambitions. For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).

Formally you will be part of the Concern-infrastructure team, in a department made up of a group of circa 35, generally awesome, international, smart people. You will work together with humanities and social science researchers from the three/four Humanities Cluster institutes and other KNAW IT teams.

The department is a part of the Humanities Cluster (HuC) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The HuC was formed in 2016 by three internationally leading research institutes in the social sciences and humanities: The Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands, the Meertens Institute, and the International Institute for Social History (IISH). We welcome and support a variety of development & networking opportunities, such as presenting and publishing the results of your work, working with engineers in different teams and areas of expertise, or engaging directly with researchers in the humanities cluster who developing new projects and grant applications. The department is located at the Spinhuis in Center of Amsterdam and nearby public transport.
