Data Science | Physics Internship: Neural Network for Fluid Dynamics

Introduction

ASML is the world's leading provider of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry, manufacturing complex machines that are critical to the production of integrated circuits or chips. We utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to ensure the optimal environmental conditions of the optical components in its machines to maximize output, expand lifetime and minimize service intervals. At the same time, 3D fluid dynamics simulations highlight the need for advanced surrogate models that strike a balance between predictive accuracy, computational efficiency, and convergence time. Traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods, while highly accurate, are often resource-intensive and time-consuming.

Your Assignment

Within the Flow Modelling community at ASML, we would like to gain knowledge and practical experience in applying Neural Network techniques (either Physics-informed or Data-driven) to data derived from CFD in multiphase flows. This internship assignment aims to start by focusing on simple application and/or consistent simulation data available to understand how such techniques can improve simulation lead time within a given accuracy. Specific details of the project will be discussed and defined in close collaboration with you and your university supervisor.

This is a master internship, suitable for both an apprenticeship and a graduation (thesis) project. The desired duration is 9 months, working 5 days a week (3 days onsite). The start date is as soon as possible or at the latest around September 2025.

Your Profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

  • Are a master student in Data Science or Applied Physics;

  • Have some interest and basic experience in Physics of fluid;

  • Be curious about Neural Network techniques;

  • Possess programming skills and experience using High Performance Cluster;

  • Preferably have experience in starCCM+ or in using a similar tool;

  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;

  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.

Diversity and inclusion

ASML is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values and respects the importance of a diverse and inclusive workforce. It is the policy of the company to recruit, hire, train and promote persons in all job titles without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We recognize that diversity and inclusion is a driving force in the success of our company.
