We are looking for a skilled bioinformatician to join our team! If you have experience with genomic data analysis, sequencing, and bioinformatics tools (R, Python), apply now to contribute to impactful cardiovascular research!

About your role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated bioinformatician to join our department. The successful candidate will have strong computational skills and experience in managing and analyzing large-scale, including (biobank scale), genomic and multi-omic data. You will be responsible for processing and interpreting whole exome and whole genome sequencing data to derive meaningful insights in cardiovascular disease research. Additionally, you will guide Master’s and PhD students in the group with genomic analyses. You will work in a highly dynamic environment with multiple international collaborations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing, processing and analyzing SNP-array, whole exome and whole genome sequencing data.
  • Performing quality control, sequence alignment, variant calling, and annotation.
  • Developing and implementing computational pipelines for large genomic and multi-omic datasets.
  • Utilizing bioinformatics tools and programming languages (R, Python) to perform statistical analyses.
  • Collaborating within an interdisciplinary team that includes geneticists, data scientists, laboratory scientists, cardiologists and vascular surgeons.
  • Interpreting and presenting results in a clear manner.
  • Guiding Master’s and PhD students in the group with genomic analyses.

About you

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in R and Python.
  • Experience working with large (biobank scale) genomic and multi-omic datasets.
  • Proficiency in sequence quality control, alignment tools and variant calling methodologies.
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments and cloud-based solutions is important.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with workflow management systems (e.g., Snakemake, Nextflow).
  • Knowledge of statistical and machine learning techniques for genomic data analysis.
  • Experience with databases and data visualization tools.
  • Experience with single cell/single nuclei RNA ATAC sequencing is a plus.
  • Solid grasp of statistics.

Our offer

  • One-year contract with the prospect of a permanent contract.
  • Many opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • A collaborative and dynamic work environment.
  • Classification in salary scale 10: € 3.493 to € 5.504 gross for full-time employment (depending on education and experience), with a possibility to move up to scale 11 once sufficiently experienced.
  • In addition to a good basic salary, we offer 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Vacation hours: 190.4 per year for full-time and possibility to save additional hours.
  • Free and unlimited access to our online learning environment GoodHabitz.
  • Pension accrual with the ABP, of which we pay 70% of the premium.
  • A reimbursement of your public transport expenses. Do you prefer to come by bike? Then we have a good bicycle scheme.
  • An active staff association and Jong Amsterdam UMC association, both of which organize fun (sports) activities and events.

About your workplace

The Cardiogenetics research group at the department of Experimental Cardiology of Amsterdam UMC specializes in large-scale multi-omic studies in cardiovascular disease, including cardiac arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease and aortopathy.

The Department of Experimental Cardiology is, together with the Department of Physiology, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery part of the Amsterdam UMC Heart Centre, and our research is embedded within the research institute Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences. Translational studies on inherited cardiovascular diseases is a focus area of the Amsterdam UMC Heart Centre. The research team is multi-disciplinary and comprises ambitious junior PI's, statistical geneticists, computational biologists, laboratory scientists and clinicians. Our work integrates genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and clinical data to advance the understanding, and improve risk prediction and treatments for the studied conditions.

Amsterdam UMC has an open culture. This means that we hope that everyone feels welcome in our organization and that we strive to offer equal opportunities to everyone. We therefore cordially invite all interested parties to respond to this vacancy.
