Within Test & Commissioning, you will be working as part of a wider team that tests and commissions the Astute & Dreadnought class submarines. This is one of the final phases of boat build and ensures that the mechanical and electrical systems are built to their design intent and function safely and reliably. As a degree apprentice, you will be working alongside qualified engineers on the Reactor Systems to support these tests that are essential for the submarine safe operation.
During the programme, individuals will be working towards becoming a qualified and competent commissioning engineer and studying Nuclear Engineering at University.
Specific activities could include:
Achieving safety from the system by applying electromechanical plant isolations and dissipating any stored energy in order for the plant to be worked on safely.

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world-class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test, and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges.
