Internship Opportunity in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes

Our team and mission

This position is based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) - Noordwijk, Netherlands

Under the direct authority of the Head of the Future Missions and Architecture Department, the Head of the Future Missions and Instruments Division (H/EOP-FM) is responsible for preparatory activities for future missions and instruments including:

  • Elaborating new mission and instrument concepts, and establishing the related technology development requirements;
  • Implementing preparatory activities for all missions before Phase A;
  • Conducting Phase A for all ESA missions not yet approved for implementation (i.e., including Earth Explorers but excluding Copernicus and meteorological missions);
  • Participating in the implementation of Phase A for Copernicus and meteorological missions;
  • Establishing in coordination with EOP-P and EOP-B, their programmatic frame (Cost at Completion, schedule, procurement, and geo-return) and handing over to EOP-P the mission dossier (technical, programmatic, scientific) for a joint feasibility review prior to implementation;
  • Implementing an extensive plan of future technologies research and development activities together with D/TEC, acting as point of contact for technology preparation for the Directorate, and for any matters related to ESA’s Discovery, Preparation and Technology Development Programme and General Support Technology Programme;
  • Addressing Earth Observation frequency management issues together with the Agency’s Frequency Management Office (OPS-SF);
  • Supporting the development of the overall EOP strategy with regard to future missions;
  • Performing risk-retirement activities through the study and pre-development of new instruments (including Meteorological and Copernicus Missions) until their completion;
  • Conducting all activities necessary to reduce risk before mission selection;
  • Conducting the Boost Future-Earth Observation initial phase;
  • Conducting agreed activities related to the space segment (upstream activities) of the InCubed Earth Watch programme element in coordination with EOP-S.

On quantum sensing specifically, the departments’ mission is to harness the potential of quantum sensing technology, developing compact, power-efficient and space-qualified sensors capable of enhancing Earth observation, enriching our understanding of the Earth, and driving innovation and scientific excellence in addressing environmental challenges.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic of the internship: Development of a Demo for a Database on Quantum Sensors

We invite you to join us as an intern and contribute to an exciting project aimed at accelerating innovation in quantum sensor technology for Earth observation.

The primary goal of this internship is to develop a proof-of-concept demo for a quantum sensor database, similar to what has been achieved for nanosatellite missions. You will focus on creating a functional prototype that enables users to compare quantum sensors based on key performance metrics, known as Figures of Merit. The demo will include sample data and projections for future trends. This role is ideal for someone with a background in industrial engineering, database development, and an interest in quantum sensing technologies and space-based Earth observation.

During the internship, you will be responsible for developing the demo from the ground up, focusing on the following key areas:

  1. Identifying Figures of Merit (FoMs) for Quantum Sensors
  • Research and identify FoMs for quantum sensors;
  • Compile and analyze FoMs from a few selected quantum sensors to include as sample data for the demo.

Designing the Database Demo

Design and structure the demo version of the database.

Visualizing Technology Trajectories

Create visualizations that demonstrate historical trends and future projections for quantum sensors, using sample data.

Contributing to Modelling of Quantum Sensors and Assessment for Earth observation applications

Develop physics models to link the quantum sensor FoMs to Earth observation mission requirements for at least one quantum sensor.

Applying the Database to Prioritize Technology for Earth Observation Mission

Use the demo database to prioritize a quantum sensor technology for at least one Earth observation mission concept.

Presenting and Documenting Your Work

  • Prepare presentation to showcase the demo and its potential future applications;
  • Document the design and architecture of the demo, providing recommendations for its development into a fully functional database.

Education

You must be a university student, preferably in your final or second-to-last year of a university course at Master’s level and you need to remain enrolled at your University for the entire duration of the internship.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

It would be an advantage to have knowledge and background in:

  • Engineering, technology scouting, or data science;
  • Emerging technologies, especially quantum sensors;
  • Basic database design and management (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, or even mockup tools);
  • Technology trends, data collection;
  • Creating mock-ups, visualizations, and demo interfaces for database functionality.
