Director PhD Programme in Law

Amsterdam Law School is currently looking for a Director for its PhD Programme in Law. All candidates seeking a PhD at the school enroll in this programme, which each year welcomes about 10-15 new PhD students (as employees or on scholarships), in addition to external candidates. The director supervises the organization and quality control of the doctoral programme as a whole, including admissions and course offerings. The PhD Programme in Law is situated within the Amsterdam Graduate School of Law.

What will you do?

The Director of the PhD Programme in Law:

  • Is charged with the organization and quality assurance of the PhD programme in law as a whole;
  • Is responsible for the organization, coordination, and implementation of the educational component of the PhD programme;
  • Chairs the Board of Admissions of the PhD programme;
  • Serves on the Graduate Studies Committee;
  • Ensures compliance with UvA-wide PhD policy and regulations.

What do you bring?

The Director of the PhD Programme in Law:

  • Has experience in academic educational design;
  • Is capable of translating developments in the (legal) scientific field into an appropriate educational programme;
  • Has extensive experience in academic (legal) research, including in supervision;
  • Has an eye for the interests of PhD students and knows how to secure commitment from (prospective) supervisors for successful PhD participation;
  • Possesses excellent communication skills, a good command of English and, at a minimum, adequate command of Dutch.

What do we offer you?

The role provides the opportunity to play a key role in guiding a new generation of scholars into academia through the PhD programme. The appointment is for a period of three years, with the possibility of reappointment. This role is open to academic staff (in principle, UHD level or higher) already employed at the Faculty of Law. For the tasks involved, 0.2 FTE is allocated.
