At UvA, we strive for nothing less than a safe, healthy, and pleasant environment for both our employees and our students: an environment where everyone feels respected and free from undesirable behavior. If you believe in these values and in the importance of an inclusive community, this is your chance to contribute to it.
The Amsterdam Law School is currently looking for a PhD counselor, who will fulfill the role of a confidential advisor. We are specifically looking for an academic colleague with an international background or international experience.

What will you do?

As confidential advisor, you will offer guidance and (initial) support to colleagues who are confronted with undesirable behavior and seek support in this regard. You are independent, empathetic, competent in conducting conversations and giving advice. You are willing to take part in the necessary training to successfully fulfill this role. Your responsibilities will include referring to specialists or institutions as needed, providing guidance and support on possible solutions, and advising and supporting with formal complaints. You will provide follow-up care when needed.
In this position, you will additionally serve as a designated confidential advisor and counselor for PhD candidates. There are around 130 researchers attached to the faculty as internal or external PhD candidates, with an annual incoming cohort of 10-15 each year. In your role as a counselor, you meet the PhD candidate’s needs for an approachable counselor and advisor. You play an active role in this by being visible and initiating conversations with new PhD students. The PhD counselor holds an independent position within the faculty and falls directly under the supervision of the faculty Dean. When appropriate, the counselor serves as an advisor (to the extent that confidentiality has not been requested by the PhD candidate) to the Amsterdam Law School PhD in Law Director. In addition, the PhD counselor is part of the Graduate Studies Committee. What do you bring?

You are approachable, sincere, and empathetic. You appreciate the trust and confidence within our organization and are able to listen well and reflect on behaviour. You are preferably not (directly) involved in any of the Faculty's research centers. You treat confidential information, and you can distinguish facts, interpretations, and perceptions.
Further:

  • you have successfully completed or are motivated and willing to complete an accredited training course for confidential advisors;
  • you have a PhD and preferably have experience in supervising PhD students and/or junior researchers;
  • you have sufficient command of the English language and preferably also of Dutch.

What do we offer you?

This role is only open to (former) academic colleagues. For your efforts as (dedicated) confidential advisor, you will be exempt from your regular duties for the average time commitment of 60 hours per year. For the tasks involved as PhD counselor, an additional 0.1 fte will be allocated. When the candidate doesn’t have a full-time appointment, (in consultation) this additional fte can be granted on top of the regular appointment of the candidate. The appointment is for a period of three years, with the possibility of reappointment.
