Summer Intern Naval Ships Mechanical Engineer

Location: Scotstoun (Glasgow)

Start Date: 23rd June 2025

BAE Systems offers a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements. However, it is expected on our Summer Intern programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week.

We design and build a full range of naval ships, from offshore patrol vessels to giant aircraft carriers, providing customers the capability to fulfil extensive naval operations worldwide. We are the only provider of complex warships and their combat management systems to the UK Royal Navy’s surface fleet.

Why BAE Systems?

This is a place where you’ll be able to make a real difference. You’ll be part of an inclusive culture that values diversity and rewards integrity and merit, where you’ll be empowered to fulfil your potential. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and particularly from sections of the community currently underrepresented in our industry, including women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

What You Will Be Doing

As a Summer Intern, you will be involved in the design, development, and testing of complex mechanical systems and turning ideas into products. You will learn how to generate concept ideas and turn them into viable solutions, gaining experience with 3D modelling and analysis tools factoring in considerations like materials, manufacture, assembly, cost, and performance.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be the one who turns ideas into products. You will be involved in the design, development, and testing of complex mechanical systems. In the early stages of a project, you will apply scientific principles and technical information to generate concept ideas. After this, you will select the most suitable design and turn it into a viable solution.

Through 3D modelling and a range of analysis tools, you will create a detailed design of the product that factors in considerations like materials, manufacture, assembly, cost, and performance. Our military and commercial programmes push our capabilities and technologies to the limit of what is achievable today.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Capturing and analysing requirements to understand customer/business needs and the context in which the system will be used.
  • Supporting the design and optimisation of system architectures and solutions using system modelling techniques.
  • Facilitating successful integration of systems and sub-systems.
  • Identifying and mitigating failure modes.
  • Supporting the identification of safety hazards and the assessment and mitigation of safety risks.
  • Creating high-quality written reports and calculations to back up engineering decisions.

Skills

As a minimum requirement, you’ll need to be on track for a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Engineering, or Marine Engineering (Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing or another allied subject is also acceptable).

To be considered for this role, you must be returning to university to complete your degree.

Opportunities for Growth and Development

We encourage employees to explore projects beyond their primary responsibilities, offering diverse experiences. With a wide range of products and a multinational presence, there are ample opportunities for employees to engage in various projects and initiatives.

Community Involvement

BAE Systems values community engagement. Employees are encouraged to participate in community projects, STEM initiatives, and employee resource groups, providing valuable learning experiences outside of their regular roles.

Retention and Career Development

Recognising the importance of retaining talented individuals, we offer sponsorship, career development support, and high-potential development programs. These initiatives help employees plan their careers effectively and provide opportunities for accelerated development for those who demonstrate aspiration, ability, and performance.

Benefits

You’ll receive benefits including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance, and a company-contributed Share Incentive Plan. You’ll also have access to additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work, and employee discounts - you may also be eligible for an annual incentive.

Inclusivity in Our Recruitment Process

We strive to make our recruitment processes as inclusive as possible. If you have a disability or health condition (e.g., dyslexia, autism, an anxiety disorder) that may affect your performance in certain assessment types, please speak to your recruiter about potential reasonable adjustments.

Our Environmental Responsibility

As a future-focused business, we’re committed to changing the world we live in for the better. Our target is to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. We’re innovating new ways to develop on-site renewable electricity and setting ambitious targets for water consumption and waste generation.
