Summer Intern Naval Ships Naval Architect

Location: Scotstoun (Glasgow)

Start Date: 23rd June 2025

BAE Systems offers a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements. For the Summer Intern programme, it's expected you'll attend the site 4 days per week. Note that this may change based on business needs, and your line manager will outline specific working arrangements.

We design and build a comprehensive range of naval ships, from offshore patrol vessels to giant aircraft carriers, enabling customers to conduct extensive naval operations worldwide. We are the sole provider of complex warships and combat management systems to the UK Royal Navy’s surface fleet. Do you have what it takes to join our Naval Ships team?

Why BAE Systems?

This is a place where you can make a real difference. You'll be part of an inclusive culture valuing diversity, rewarding integrity and merit, and empowering you to fulfill your potential. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, including women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

What you will be doing

Naval Architecture at BAE Systems covers a large part of the ship design lifecycle: from concept and design through build, trials, commissioning, and customer delivery. Roles are available across various disciplines, including Wholeship Engineering, Structures, Hydrodynamics, Stability, and Seamanship and Outfit, tailored to your interests and skillset. As a Summer Intern, you will join for 12 weeks to contribute to and learn from our exciting projects. We will place you in a suitable role, where you'll be a key team member throughout your scheme. Following your internship, you may qualify for fast-tracking onto our Accelerate Graduate Scheme.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Wholeship Integration, providing engineering support during build;
  • Structural design, spanning through production;
  • Hull design and performance modeling to meet customer requirements;
  • Stability modeling throughout design and build maturation;
  • Integration of Seamanship and Outfit equipment into the ship systems.

Skills

As a minimum requirement, you must be on track to obtain a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Technology, Marine Engineering, or Offshore Engineering. You must be returning to university to complete your degree to be considered for this role.

Opportunities for Growth and Development

We encourage employees to explore projects beyond their primary responsibilities, providing diverse experiences. With various products and a multinational presence, there are ample opportunities for engagement in various projects and initiatives.

Community Involvement

BAE Systems values community engagement alongside professional development. Employees are encouraged to participate in community projects, STEM initiatives, and employee resource groups, providing valuable learning experiences outside their regular roles.

Recognizing the importance of retaining talented individuals, we offer sponsorship, career development support, and high-potential development programs. These initiatives aim to help employees effectively plan their careers, offering accelerated development opportunities for those demonstrating aspiration, ability, and performance.

Benefits

You’ll receive benefits, including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance, and a company-contributed Share Incentive Plan. Additionally, you can access flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work, and employee discounts—you may also be eligible for an annual incentive.

Inclusivity within our Recruitment Process

We aim for our recruitment processes to be as inclusive as possible. If you have a disability or health condition (e.g., dyslexia, autism, an anxiety disorder, etc.) that may impact your performance in certain assessment types, please discuss potential reasonable adjustments with your recruiter.
