Graduate Naval Ships Mechanical Engineer

We design and build a full range of naval ships from offshore patrol vessels through to giant aircraft carriers, giving customers the capability to fulfill extensive naval operations around the world. We are the only provider of complex warships and their combat managements to the UK Royal Navy’s surface fleet. Do you have what it takes to join our Naval Ships team?

Why BAE Systems?

This is a place where you’ll be able to make a real difference. You’ll be part of an inclusive culture that values diversity, rewards integrity and merit, and where you’ll be empowered to fulfill your potential. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and particularly from sections of the community who are currently underrepresented within our industry, including women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

What You Will Be Doing

As a Graduate, you will be involved in the design, development, and testing of complex mechanical systems and turning ideas into products. You will learn how to generate concept ideas and turn them into viable solutions, gaining experience of 3D modeling and analysis tools that will help you factor in considerations including materials, manufacture, assembly, cost, and performance.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be the one who turns ideas into products. In the early stages of a project, you will apply scientific principles and technical information to generate concept ideas. After this, you will select the most suitable design and turn it into a viable solution. Through 3D modeling and a range of analysis tools, you will create a detailed design of the product that factors into considerations such as materials, manufacture, assembly, cost, and performance to name just a few. Our military and commercial programs require us to push our capabilities and technologies to the limit of what is achievable today.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Capturing and analyzing requirements to understand the customer/business needs and the context in which the system will be used.
  • Supporting the design and optimization of system architectures and solutions using system modeling techniques.
  • Facilitating successful integration of systems and sub-systems.
  • Identifying and mitigating failure modes.
  • Supporting the identification of safety hazards and the assessment and mitigation of safety risk.
  • Creating high-quality written reports and calculations to back up engineering decisions.

Opportunities for Growth and Development

We encourage employees to explore projects beyond their primary responsibilities, providing them with diverse experiences. With a wide range of products and a multinational presence, there are ample opportunities for employees to engage in various projects and initiatives.

These initiatives aim to help employees plan their careers effectively and provide opportunities for accelerated development for those who demonstrate aspiration, ability, and performance.

Benefits

You’ll receive benefits including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance, and a company-contributed Share Incentive Plan. You’ll also have access to additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance program, Cycle2work, and employee discounts – you may also be eligible for an annual incentive. On commencement of employment, you will be paid a one-off non-consolidated lump sum payment of £2,000 (the “Welcome Payment”).
