Internship | Underwater acoustic coating design and optimisation

About this position

Acoustic coatings for submarines are essential to reduce their detectability to sonar. While a good coating reflects as little sound as possible, the coating should also be thin, durable, and not weigh the submarine down. At TNO, we investigate and design new coating concepts, to contribute to the next generation submarines. In this project, we consider various types of coating designs, simulate their acoustic properties, and optimise the design. The results will give us insights in which geometric structures are beneficial for underwater coatings.

What will be your role?

Your main goal will be to simulate and optimise several pre-selected coating design concepts. You will get acquainted with the simulation and optimisation software, and with the underlying physics. Together with your supervisor, you will analyse which coating properties are desirable, and continue proposing new coating concepts. Depending on the interest of the candidate, additional work can be done on optimising and further automating the simulation process and software, or performing a deeper physical analysis of the acoustic properties, such as relating absorptance peaks to the coating geometry. You will finish up the project by cleaning up your code for reproduction, reporting on the results, and giving a final presentation to the team.

What we expect from you

• You are a master student in a relevant field for acoustics or optimisation, such as physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering or material engineering.
• Knowledge in Matlab and/or Python
• You have an analytic mindset, and are critical in assessing results.

The selection process

After the first CV selection, the application process will be conducted by the concerned department. TNO will provide a suitable internship agreement. For this internship vacancy it is required that the AIVD issues a security clearance (VGB) after conducting a security screening. Take into account that this process may take about 8 weeks. If you have been abroad for more than 6 consecutive months, or if you do not have the Dutch nationality, it may take longer.

• Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template (supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
• Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
  • 1) You are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
  • 2) The internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
• The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
• Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
