About us

Damen aims to become the world's most sustainable and digitally connected shipyard. The Research, Development & Innovation department develops and implements the technology and know-how to achieve these ambitions. We actively assist the business in creating an innovative product portfolio and provide forward-thinking guidance to improve the quality and performance of Damen's products and services.

This assignment will be carried out in the Damen head office in Gorinchem. The daily supervision will be primarily from the RD&I Hydromechanics Team, collaboration with other Research or Development teams is highly likely as cross specialization insight proves highly valuable for many topics being undertaken within the department.

The role

At Damen, the RD&I Hydromechanics team is dedicated to advancing our expertise and driving innovation in ship design and performance. As an intern or graduating student, you’ll play a vital role in this mission, contributing to one of our three main themes:

  • Seakeeping: Understanding and improving how ships behave in various sea conditions
  • Power and resistance: Utilizing advance simulations to improve propulsion efficiency and reduce resistance
  • Maneuvering: Developing advance models predicting ship maneuvering at sea

Within these three themes there are many specific topics which can be undertaken. Recent examples include:

  • CFD Analysis of Air Lubricated Effects on Ship Propulsive Performance
  • Data Driven Seakeeping: Is validating the Current Seakeeping Tools with Observed Ship Data Feasible?
  • Stability Assessment of Tugs in Escort Operations Using Time Domain Simulations

Key accountabilities

As a student you will:

  • Deliver a detailed in-depth analysis of your research problem
  • Plan and organize your work in order to answer the research question
  • Be navigating a multidisciplinary field within hydromechanics, interacting with key stakeholders to understand how solutions can be applied
  • Be expected to present your final results to the university, RD&I department and other interested colleagues

Skills & Experience

This assignment is intended for someone

  • Enrolled in a university as Master student Naval Architecture / Maritime Technology / Mathematics or Applied Physics
  • With affinity for working with data and understanding of physical hydromechanical principles
  • Independent, curious, analytical, and proactive
  • With good command of the English language (spoken and written)
