The position

In the position of Materials and Corrosion Engineer you are responsible for the material selection, cathodic protection and coating design for offshore wind foundations. You will be part of the Mechanical Engineering department supporting offshore (wind) projects from design to fabrication phase. With your expertise on coating and corrosion protection, you know how to bridge the gap between Engineering and the QHSE department.

With 20 years’ proven experience and an impressive track record in constructing offshore wind projects, Van Oord is leading the way in the transition towards renewable energy. To set the new standard for the future, it is important to test and demonstrate advanced technologies. At Van Oord, we work on building the foundation for the next generation of offshore wind turbines. For the Borssele Wind Farm Site V, a project film series was created where we put innovation into practice.

Your responsibilities

This role offers an unique opportunity to contribute to important projects, which have impact to the energy transition needs of the future. You have the ability to translate complex matters into understandable insights. Furthermore, you are responsible for:

  • Support offshore (wind) projects and tenders with design and technical advice on material selection, coating and corrosion protection;
  • Gate-keeping and optimising the company’s technical specifications for wind turbine foundation, i.e. coating, corrosion protection and material specifications;
  • Initiating and supporting innovations related to your field of expertise, including managing research projects (mock-up and testing) at our yard in Moerdijk;
  • Interface on technical level with external stakeholders, e.g. clients and certification authorities.

The Mechanical Engineering team has 18 enthusiastic colleagues, who set the new standard for our future offshore wind projects. Our team can be described as the technical knowledge center on foundation design offshore wind. We will continue to grow the upcoming years to support the growing demand for renewable energy.

Job requirements

You have a hands-on mentality, are result-oriented and analytical. Further, you see a challenge in project dynamics, related deadlines and you have strong communicative skills. Next to that:

  • You have a completed Master’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering or equivalent, with the emphasis on metallurgy and electrochemistry;
  • In-depth knowledge on one or more of the following fields of expertise: cathodic protection, electrochemistry, coating technology and/or steel fabrication;
  • Experience in concrete technology, polymer science and composites is a pre;
  • Working experience in a project environment and the capacity to switch easily between different projects is a pre;
  • Excellent command of the English language both verbally and written.
  • You are fulltime available (minimal 32 hours) and willing to travel regularly to our office in Gorinchem.
