The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam. (UvA). HIMS performs internationally recognized research in molecular sciences, both curiosity as well as application driven. This is partly done in cooperation with the chemical, energy, flavour & food, medical and high-tech industries. Within the Synthesis and catalysis cluster, the Organic Chemistry Group (SOC) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher. The postdoctoral researcher will perform the research in the laboratory of the SOC group in collaboration with AstraZeneca (dr. Magnus Johansson).

What are you going to do

The project "C-H Methylation for late-stage drug discovery" is a joint project of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and AstraZeneca, funded by Chemistry NL. Symeres is also involved in this collaboration. Our goal is to develop general C-H methylation reactions that will allow the direct introduction of methyl groups into a number of lead compounds in order to significantly increase their biological potency.

What do we require

  • A PhD degree in organic chemistry and catalysis;
  • You should be a creative thinker that likes challenging projects;
  • You have a background in organic synthesis and catalysis;
  • You should be team players as the projects will be carried out in the context of a collaborative program;
  • You should have excellent project- and time management skills;
  • You should have excellent communication skills; for presenting data in conferences and workshops and to potential partners;
  • fluency in English, both written and spoken.

You will be appointed at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
Your experience and profile

  • A PhD degree in organic chemistry and catalysis with substantial experience in metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization processes is required;
  • The ability to collaborate and adapt in an international team is required and candidates must have good communication skills in English, both written and oral.

Due to limitations in recruitment budget, we will preferably consider candidates that are currently in Europe.

The position is open until we find a proper canditate.

Our offer

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting as soon as possible, for the duration of 12 months. An extension may be possible based on available funding combined with adequate performance.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 3,226 - € 5,090 (scale 10). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% year-end allowance. The UFO profile Researcher 4 is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
