Job description

Do you want to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical imaging research? The Biomedical Engineering Group, within the Department of Cardiology at Erasmus MC, is looking for a passionate PhD candidate to join our team and investigate the next generation of photoacoustic imaging devices.

Photoacoustic imaging is a hybrid modality that visualizes optical information by ultrasound, enabling deep functional and molecular imaging, looking at parameters like tissue composition and blood oxygenation. The successful candidate will be involved in designing, building and developing all-optical sensors for photoacoustic endoscopes. The research is part of the European project PhotonMed, which comprises a large number of industrial and academic partners, developing new applications of photonics in medicine. Your key responsibilities are:

  • Conducting research on optical ultrasound sensors.
  • Integration of sensors in endoscopic devices.
  • Designing, implementing and analyzing experiments to investigate the clinical applications of photoacoustic endoscopy.
  • Preparing scientific reports and publications.
  • Effective collaboration with other consortium partners and within the local team.

Work environment

Biomedical Engineering is a group of 70 researchers performing highly innovative research in cardiovascular diagnosis and therapy. We focus on translational research in imaging with ultrasound and light, ultrasound contrast agents for molecular imaging and drug delivery and vascular biomechanics.

Qualifications and skills

  • A PhD or equivalent degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or related fields.
  • A solid foundation in (biomedical) optics, signal processing, and preferably also medical device design.
  • Experience in photoacoustic imaging or related techniques is an asset.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or C++.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both in speaking and writing.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently as well as in a team.

Terms of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 4 years.
  • The gross monthly salary is € 3.017,- in the 1st year and gradually increases to € 3.824,- in the 4th year (scale OIO).
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and a individual travel expense package.
  • An International Office which aids you in preparing for you arrival and stay.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits, such as a incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.

We are Erasmus MC. Our roots lie in Rotterdam, a city and port of international standing. We are the most innovative university medical center in the Netherlands and one of the world’s leading centers of scientific research.
