The Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (WdKA/RUAS), offers a variety of bachelor and master programs in the field of visual culture, art, design, education in arts, and leisure management. The curriculum of the Willem de Kooning Academy is founded in an interdisciplinary ethos in which research through making, theoretical reflection and participatory practices form the three pillars of the Institute. The Piet Zwart Institute, is part of the WdKA, hosting four full time and two part-time international masters in art, design and art education. The programs work experimentally across different media and contexts, offering a rich combination of in-depth specialization and interdisciplinary exchange. We educate professionals who have a critically reflective, questioning and imaginative approach to their work.
The Master of Education in Arts is two-year part-time research master. The relation between practice and theory is central to the program: students design, experiment and research pedagogical models and tactics. Focusing on the intersection of research, pedagogical experimentation, art and design education (from an interdisciplinary perspective) and social practices. The course welcomes practitioners in the fields of secondary and higher art/design education, museum education, as well as artists and designers challenging the boundaries between socially engaged practices and experimental pedagogy. For us collaborations and interdisciplinary exchanges are essential to the future of education.
– Co-tutor of the Practice and Research Seminar and graduation supervisor
– Presenting, discussing and experimenting with exemplary pedagogical practices, connected to the students’ working practice.
– Supervising graduation research on a master level in the field of art and design education and adjacent experimental fields.
– Teaching a practice-based research methodology: familiarizing students with the movement between test-casing and observing pedagogical/educational practice and critical reflection/theorizing.
– Showing ways of structuring and gathering documentation material of practice-based research, creating meaningful connections and building a coherent narrative.
To complement the current team of the Master of Education in Arts, we seek a tutor with:
– Prior experience in teaching within the field of art and design education with an engaging and student-centered approach, additional knowledge of secondary education is an asset.
– A curious, engaged, critical and research-oriented attitude.
– Ability to work independently, while carefully coordinating tasks in alignment with the staff and management of the course.
– Experience with working in larger educational/cultural institutions.
– A master's degree, favorably in art, design or relevant program.
– A good command of verbal and written English.
– EU/ECC work authorisation.
The Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam) offers a temporary contract for 1 year (D4 contract CAO HBO) of FTE 0.15. Depending on experience, the salary amounts to a minimum of € 3.896,33 and a maximum of € 5.936,77 gross per month (scale 11 cao hbo) for full-time employment, excluding vacation allowance and year-end bonus. Our fringe benefits include an attractive pension scheme.
The Piet Zwart Institute offers a notable professional, progressive and international educational environment. The post holder reports directly to the Course Director, and works collaboratively with other core tutors within MEiA’s integrated curriculum structure, as well as with colleagues within the WdKA at large.

The selection procedure will take place in two phases. A short list of applicants will be drawn based on CV, letter of motivation and portfolio, followed by interviews.
