Bioinformatics Educator

The UMC Utrecht (UMCU) has created a community where bioinformaticians get together to share expertise and collaborate to solve complex challenges with state-of-the-art science. Examples include creating bespoke pipelines and analytic algorithms for novel measurement platforms available in house, such as the spatial omics platform, leverage the new opportunities in AI for omics data analysis or addressing the urgent need to make data FAIR. We are looking for a Bioinformatician (PhD) to help coordinate and teach bioinformatics to students of the Bioinformatics and Biocomplexity Master, as well as other Masters that include bioinformatics courses.
Key responsibilities:

• Help develop and teach bioinformatics courses.
• Collaborate closely with researchers to understand their bioinformatics challenges, provide advice where necessary, and connect these researchers to experts within the UMCU (or UU).
• Foster the bioinformatic community by organizing seminars, work discussions, and promoting engagement around high-priority research topics.
• Mentor and provide guidance to bioinformaticians within the UMCU.

As part of the Utrecht Science Park, the UMCU is embedded within a major hub for bioinformatics research and education in the Netherlands. Bioinformatics expertise at the UMCU is distributed throughout different divisions of the organisation. Currently, the UMCU has an established meeting series that connects bioinformatics experts from the divisions LAB, Brain, Heart & Lungs. You will be based in one of the departments in the division LAB, based on your own background. Here you will work in close collaboration with the education team and connect with scientists beyond your department (with the Utrecht Bioinformatics Center, the Julius Centrum or the Genome Diagnostics at UMCU for instance). You will also work closely with other research coordinators and managers from the sequencing, single-cell, spatial omics and proteomics facilities.

• PhD in bioinformatics, or related discipline.
• Affinity with teaching and community building.
• Proven experience in bioinformatics and/or data science, including Python and R.
• Strong self-reliance and ability to work independently and to take responsibility.
• Team-oriented with excellent spoken and written English language skills.

• A salary between €3493 and €5504 gross per month (salary scale 10), based on full-time employment (36 hours).
• The duration of your contract is initially for 1 year, with a possibility of extension to an additional 3 years.
• Year-end bonus of 8.3% and holiday allowance of 8%.
• Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 70% of the monthly contribution.
