Reports To: Country Director, Netherlands, dotted line to CENE Regional Medical Director

This is what you will do:

The Medical Lead is a member of the Alexion Netherlands Leadership team as well as the CENE Medical Affairs Team and will provide scientific and medical leadership for Rare Disease Therapeutic Areas by establishing an in depth understanding of the relevant medical landscape in relation to relevant disease states and Alexion products.

The Medical Lead will be developing and implementing long-term strategy and building medical affairs practices and infrastructure in line with overall Alexion strategy. The Medical Lead will provide strategic insight and input to Alexion activities in the therapeutic areas (TAs) and will provide support to all functions to ensure achievement of local objectives and further to the global medical affairs mission to maximize patient outcomes by setting and continuously advancing the evidence-based medical standard of care. The Medical Lead will ensure implementation, coordination, and communication between regional and local organizations in all medical matters, acting as medical expert for the TAs, including support for other functions.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong scientific knowledge, business acumen, medical leadership, is a persuasive communicator of science and has an entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to work collaboratively across different functions and countries.

You will be responsible for:

  • Demonstrate leadership, direction, and accountability for leading, coaching and managing 2 direct reports to ensure achievements of business objectives and personal development.
  • Development and implementation of the medical affairs strategy and plan for assigned therapeutic areas (aHUS and PNH), including RWE and account specific HEOR projects.
  • Develop and maintain high-value added relationships with scientific experts, societies, relevant Patient association groups and other key stakeholders.
  • Close collaboration with the Patient advocacy team to develop relationships and partnerships with.
  • Demonstrate strong business acumen to ensure the medical affairs strategy enables the achievement of the Alexion Netherlands goals.
  • Collaboration with clinical operations and medical advisor pipeline (MAP) to support the performance of clinical study feasibility, effective study implementation and ongoing management of trials, including disease registries.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of Alexion therapeutic areas, current developments, and competitive environment.
  • Attend appropriate national and international meetings and congresses.
  • Support Market Access activities and reimbursement applications in close collaboration with the market access team.
  • Maintain knowledge about local laws and guidelines, codes of practices and Alexion policies relevant to medical affairs activities and educate the local team
  • Acts as the primary reviewer and approver of all plans, projects and materials developed by the cross-functional TA teams. Nominated Signatory responsibilities for materials.
  • Spend time in the field to provide appropriate support and coaching to the medical team (30 % expected)

You will need to have:

  • Medical educated. Master degree in (bio)medical science. M.D. or pharmacist.
  • 7+ years-experience in the pharmaceutical or the biotech industry: rare disease experience is plus.
  • At least 3 years of People Leadership experience, experience as a medical affairs manager or medical therapeutic area lead
  • Strong x-functional collaboration mindset
  • In depth knowledge of the Dutch legislation relevant to pharmaceutical sales and marketing – Dutch healthcare system and Dutch reimbursement system and processes.
  • Ability to manage all aspects of medical affairs responsibilities on regional as well as country level.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Dutch and English
  • Ability to work at the office in the Hague 3 days a week

We would prefer for you to have:

  • Strategic thinking, very good planning skills and budget management
  • Experience in leading/implementing local RWE studies.
  • Experience with new product launches
  • Ability to work in a high pace environment.
