At HEMA, we are building an efficient and future-proof retail technology landscape. To achieve this, we are establishing a new Engineering Organization. This is your chance to help lay the technological foundation for the most iconic, nearly 100-year-old department store in the Netherlands. Do you want to make a direct impact on HEMA’s digital progress? Then this role is for you!

The challenge

In this role, you become part of the Store Tech domain: the team responsible for the digital solutions that support our store operations. You will work on a landscape that includes PDA applications, custom native apps, SaaS solutions, APIs, Kafka events, AWS DataZone, file transfers and a microservices architecture. You will help connect store processes with modern technology, working closely with product owners, business analysts, engineers, and stakeholders from the business.

Together, you translate operational needs into scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions. A key part of your role is also to help modernise the Store Tech landscape. You contribute to migrating legacy solutions such as SHS, CSI, and CCTV towards more future-proof architectures. By doing so, you help HEMA build stronger internal ownership, reduce dependency on external suppliers, and create sustainable domain knowledge within the engineering organisation.

You will work with technologies and systems such as React Native, SAP integrations, REST APIs, IDocs, ABAP, Kafka, AWS Lambda, RFID platforms, ESL solutions and SaaS platforms such as Nedap iD Cloud, Hanshow, Blue Yonder and SMaas. This role reports to our Chapter Lead Backend, while you work day-to-day in the Store Tech domain on solutions that directly support our stores. The chapters bring engineers with similar expertise together to share knowledge, strengthen engineering standards and support professional growth across domains.

What we offer

At HEMA, you’ll experience an environment where people truly work together. You’ll receive proper guidance, useful feedback, and gain valuable experience. Whether you are looking for extending your knowledge and skills or for helping others to grow, you are welcome here. In addition, at HEMA you’ll get:

  • 💸 A competitive salary based on your knowledge and experience.
  • 🌴 30 vacation days (based on a 40-hour week) and 8% holiday allowance, so you can recharge in time.
  • 🎯 A variable bonus of up to 14% of your annual salary – depending on our collective results.
  • 💸 A monthly net expense allowance.
  • 🎄 A fixed year-end bonus of 4% of your annual salary.
  • 🛍️ 15% staff discount on all your HEMA favorites – from tompouce pastries to towels and notebooks.
  • 🧓 A solid pension plan, so you're well taken care of later too.
  • 🚗 Travel allowance of €0.21 per kilometer (starting from 10 km one-way, up to a max of 30 km).
  • 🎡 Access to the ‘benefits at work’ platform, with discounts on top brands, day trips, and other extras that make life more fun.

You'll bring

You are an experienced engineer who enjoys working on complex, business-critical technology. You combine strong technical skills with ownership, curiosity, and the ability to work closely with different stakeholders. You are comfortable taking the lead in technical discussions, challenging existing solutions, and helping others make pragmatic engineering choices.

  • Strong experience in full stack or software engineering within a complex technology environment.
  • Experience with React Native development.
  • Experience with API development and system integrations.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture, preferably with Kafka.
  • Experience with cloud-native development and microservices, including AWS and AWS Lambda.
  • Experience integrating SaaS platforms or third-party systems.
  • A pragmatic mindset: you understand when to build, when to improve and when to simplify.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Dutch language skills are nice to have, but not required.
