Senior Data Engineer

At HEMA, you’ll help build the data platform that powers decisions across stores, e commerce, and supply chain. In this senior role, you go beyond pipelines: you shape how data is structured, governed, and scaled, while contributing to platform engineering and solution architecture in a fast growing engineering organization.

The challenge

As a Senior Data Engineer at HEMA, you operate at the intersection of data engineering, platform engineering, and architecture. You are responsible for building reliable data products while also helping define how our data ecosystem evolves.

You play a key role in developing and improving our central data platform. You contribute to platform engineering efforts by standardising ways of working, improving developer experience, and helping other teams onboard and use the platform effectively. This includes working with AWS-based tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and modern data processing frameworks such as Spark and Kafka.

You also contribute to governance and architecture. You help define and enforce data standards, ensure data quality, and support a scalable and compliant data ecosystem. This includes working with data catalogues, access control mechanisms, and ensuring traceability and discoverability of datasets across the organisation.

Occasionally, you assist dedicated ETL squads to design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines that ingest, transform, and serve data from a wide range of domains. These pipelines are part of a broader data mesh setup, where teams own their data products and contribute to a shared platform. You ensure that data is reliable, well-structured, and easily consumable for analytics, reporting, and operational use.

From a solution architecture perspective, you think beyond individual pipelines. You help design end-to-end data solutions, balancing business needs with technical scalability, performance, and cost-awareness. You collaborate closely with engineers, product teams, and architects to ensure that solutions fit within HEMA’s broader technology landscape.

Collaboration is key: you work in cross-functional teams with data engineers, analysts, and software engineers. You actively share knowledge, mentor less experienced colleagues, and contribute to building a strong internal engineering culture.

You’ll bring

• Extensive experience as a Senior Data Engineer in complex environments
• Strong experience designing and maintaining scalable ETL/ELT pipelines
• Deep experience with modern data stacks (e.g. all core AWS services, Spark, Kafka, Databricks or similar)
• Experience with platform engineering principles and improving developer experience
• Solid understanding of data governance, data quality, and data modelling
• Experience working in cloud-native environments and CI/CD-driven setups
• Ability to think in solution architecture: designing scalable, maintainable end-to-end data solutions
• Strong stakeholder management skills; able to translate business needs into technical solutions
• Analytical mindset with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving
• Fluent in English
