Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineer in the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Harness Section, Power Systems, EMC and Space Environments Division, Electrical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The Electromagnetic Compatibility and Harness Section supports space projects in all application domains: science, Earth observation, human spaceflight and robotic exploration, navigation, telecommunications and space transportation. The Section is also a focal point for electrical harness engineering.

The Section’s laboratory features an anechoic chamber for conducted and radiated EMC testing, complemented by several facilities for DC and AC magnetic cleanliness tests. In addition to laboratory testing, the Section performs analytical and numerical analysis. Moreover, it is responsible for research and development (R&D) activities in the domain of EMC and harness for space applications.

Duties

Reporting to the Head of Section and within the technical fields described above, your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Providing EMC engineering support to ESA projects throughout all phases of their development cycle, including:
  • Definition and analysis of requirements at system level, as well as at harness and equipment level;
  • Performing design and acceptance reviews and assessments;
  • Active participation in feasibility studies, project reviews and evaluation of procurement proposals;
  • Definition and assessment of test, control and verification plans and procedures for space equipment and systems;
  • Support to EMC test campaigns;
  • Assessment of test and analysis verification results, non-conformances and requests for waivers and deviations;
  • Definition and evaluation of magnetic cleanliness programmes and characterisation of the magnetic properties of parts and equipment;
  • Support to troubleshooting activities for space equipment and systems.
  • Planning, definition, initiation and management of research and development activities for design, testing and modelling techniques under ESA’s research and technology programmes;
  • Applying EMC analysis and modelling tools and evaluating the results obtained;
  • Monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise;
  • Contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency.

Your duties may also include supporting other activities within your field of competence, as required.

Education

A PhD or master’s degree in physics or electrical engineering, or other relevant engineering domain, and a comprehensive background in electromagnetics are required for this post.

Additional requirements

  • Profound knowledge in the field of EMC in general, with demonstrated expertise in analysis and proven practical experience in testing.
  • Expertise with analogue electronics design, computer-aided design or electromagnetic simulation is an asset, as is experience of working on projects and in large teams.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently; good communication skills.

The following are considered assets:

  • Knowledge of and experience with harness engineering or manufacturing and harness standards for aerospace.
  • Experience with magnetic cleanliness characterisation and test methods.
  • Experience with electrical safety.
  • Experience with CubeSats or satellite constellations.
