Traineeship in media monitoring, Newsroom Division

Your team

You will be part of the Internal Communications team in the Newsroom Division of the Directorate General Communications. The Newsroom Division is responsible for all media activities at the ECB, including social media and internal communications.

Our team of around ten members of staff is responsible for keeping ECB colleagues up to date on various internal and ECB-related topics, encouraging open dialogue. We do so by writing, editing and producing content in various formats (e.g. intranet articles, vlogs, infographics and presentations), organising events and providing communications advice to colleagues across the institution.

One of the team’s tasks is media monitoring. We monitor media coverage of the ECB and analyse reactions to the ECB’s own media activities. We also act as the ECB’s news desk, following the daily news on ECB-related topics, identifying relevant news reports and sharing them with colleagues across the institution, either as written text or in live presentations. In our work, we aim to single out issues raised in the media and spot communications challenges.

You will work closely with others in our Directorate General as part of cross-divisional teams handling strategic communication projects or urgent tasks.

Your role

As a trainee in media monitoring you will:

  • continuously monitor and analyse economic and other news from various media sources across Europe and share key items with ECB management and staff;
  • regularly prepare and present ECB-related and economic news in the daily meetings of the Directorate General;
  • analyse media coverage of the ECB’s media activities and write media coverage reports for ECB management.

You will also take part in other Internal Communications tasks depending on the team’s current needs and your particular skill set. For example, you might:

  • write, edit and produce content, including intranet articles;
  • contribute to the regular collection and analysis of measurement data;
  • produce audiovisual material (e.g. vlogs, infographics, images and presentations);
  • help design, prepare and deliver small and large-scale internal events, liaising with other ECB colleagues.

The traineeship offers you an excellent opportunity to work with a diverse, supportive team in a fast-paced environment. It will enable you to deepen your knowledge of a broad range of topics, from monetary policy, macroeconomics and banking supervision to European politics and institutions, and allow you to learn more about the ECB’s activities. You will also gain experience of working with various media monitoring tools and media sources.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, finance, international relations, politics, journalism or another relevant field;
  • a solid understanding of macroeconomics gained at some point during your studies;
  • a basic understanding of monetary policy, the ECB, and its main tasks and tools;
  • strong presentation (public speaking) skills and writing skills, with the ability to make complex concepts easy to understand for the target audience;
  • a good working knowledge of the MS Office package;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • the ability to read complex texts in one or more of the following languages: French, German, Italian and Spanish;
  • an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Further information

Initial traineeship of six months, with a possible extension to up to 12 months in total. The position is expected to start around 1 September 2026.
