Trainee-Data Science for EudraVigilance: ensuring quality, enabling integration, enhancing analytics

This traineeship opportunity is open for applications until 06 May 2026 23:59 CET, with an intake on 1 October 2026.

This traineeship placement is in the Healthcare Data Office at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in Amsterdam.

Placement description

We are looking for a trainee in the Healthcare Data Office.

Specific objectives and projects

The trainee will join the team working on a key modernisation initiative focused on moving from an older medicinal product database to a new, structured Product Management Service that supports better data quality and interoperability across the European medicines regulatory network. The trainee will:

  • Contribute to building new code and visual dashboards, using the Agency’s data analytics platform, to replace legacy scripts and enable more flexible and automated analyses.
  • Assist in checking the accuracy of the migration from the current medicinal product database to the new Product Management Service, including the verification of data loaded via international data exchange standards (such as HL7 FHIR).
  • Contribute to redesigning the logic that automatically categorises product information, using data from the new product system.
  • Contribute to the creation of a new pharmaceutical product identifier and the grouping logic that will replace older product group classifications, improving how medicines are tracked and analysed.
  • Participate in testing and data validation activities, including user acceptance testing, data quality checks, and verification that information from the older system is correctly and fully replaced.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand key European medicines data sources, including how medicinal product and safety information is structured and used in regulatory systems.
  • Develop practical data quality skills, applying quality assurance techniques to real product and safety datasets.
  • Gain hands‑on experience in data integration, learning how to combine and harmonise information from different systems.
  • Improve data analysis and visualisation skills, including creating interactive dashboards using modern data science tools.
  • Learn international data exchange standards, such as HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).
  • Become familiar with global data standards, including ISO IDMP (Identification of Medicinal Products) and ISO ICSR (Individual Case Safety Report).
