Your team

You will be part of the Metadata Management team in the Master- and Metadata Section of the Analytical Credit and Master Data Division, which forms part of the Directorate General Statistics of the European Central Bank (ECB).

The Metadata Management team comprises ten staff members. It plays a crucial role in supporting the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and European integrated reporting initiatives, as well as the ECB’s internal metadata management and data integration. The team is responsible for the Banks’ Integrated Reporting Dictionary (BIRD), which aims to improve the quality of data reported by banks to the EU authorities, and for the Single Data Dictionary (SDD), which aims to foster harmonisation in the description of the content of datasets and to support data integration within the ECB. It is also actively involved in the ESCB’s Integrated Reporting Framework (IReF) initiative, contributes to data integration through the Joint Bank Reporting Committee (JBRC), and works closely with national central banks, European supervisory authorities and the banking industry.

In your role as Economist-Statistician, you will help in the integration of datasets into our metadata framework. You will provide end‑to‑end support to help users design, model and validate their datasets. The role will also focus on semantic and reporting integration, including analysing reporting requirements, defining concepts and integrating them into the BIRD/SDD dictionaries. The ideal candidate enjoys knowledge‑modelling (e.g. semantic analysis of reporting requirements, definition of data structures for reporting and the integration of different concepts into a common data dictionary) and will work with metadata such as definitions, concepts and structures, rather than numerical datasets.

Your role

As an Economist-Statistician, you will:

  • analyse supervisory and statistical reporting requirements and integrate them into the BIRD/SDD dictionaries ensuring conceptual clarity and consistency;
  • contribute to semantic integration across reporting frameworks by aligning definitions, terms and concepts, including as a member of the JBRC Expert Group on Semantic Integration;
  • help design and validate structural models (datasets), guided by modelling principles, and provide conceptual guidance to stakeholders on reporting definitions, structures, and modelling to ensure long‑term reusability
  • prepare and deliver presentations, explain modelling concepts to ECB data modellers, give training sessions and promote the SDD/BIRD modelling approach;
  • contribute to the BIRD initiative’s content and coordination activities in close collaboration with the banking industry.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to further develop your expertise in structural metadata, semantic and reporting integration, and modelling methodologies. You will work with stakeholders both within and outside the ESCB in a multicultural, innovative team committed to improving metadata management to ensure a positive impact for data users, by facilitating the understanding, use and integration of data.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, mathematics, physics, engineering or another relevant field;
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of four years’ relevant professional experience in regulatory reporting, structural modelling of reporting requirements, or conceptual work on data/metadata dictionaries;
  • experience in analysing reporting requirements in particular supervisory reporting such as the EBA ITS FINREP/COREP and translating them into structured definitions or conceptual data elements;
  • basic knowledge of at least one metadata standard or information model (e.g. SDMX or DPM);
  • strong analytical and structural thinking with attention to detail and the ability to maintain coherent and consistent models over time;
  • familiarity with coding and/or programming, and strong digital skills;
  • good communication and drafting skills;
  • experience collaborating across functions and with both internal and external stakeholders;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU.

Desired:

  • a sound understanding of metadata management in business processes and of modelling conventions (e.g. naming/coding standards);
  • experience of delivering training sessions, presentations and guidance materials on modelling concepts to non‑technical audiences.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs. You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position. You are aware of your strengths and areas for development and know what motivates you to perform at your highest level.
