If you are looking to stretch and grow your career our culture will embrace you. Open up opportunities with HPE.

Job Description:

The Large-Scale Integrated Photonics (LSIP) Lab at HPE Labs has an immediate opening for a qualified research scientist with expertise in architecture and system design for emerging analog computing platforms such as ReRAM-based in-memory computing, (silicon) photonics, or quantum/quantum-inspired computing. This role will work closely with LSIP Lab colleagues in Milpitas, California, as well as with partners in Santa Barbara, Germany, and Canada. As the central (international) research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), HPE Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption into new and existing markets.

This role will be responsible for chip design, development of (micro-)architectures and overall system design, algorithm/hardware co-design, and the corresponding hardware optimization in emerging analog computing platforms based on memristive in-memory computing or similar. While most of our neuromorphic and quantum-inspired hardware research is focused on classical solutions, we would also like to explore the computational and energy-efficiency benefits of working at the quantum limit for, e.g., our photonics platforms. Furthermore, the role will work from a top-down perspective and identify key workloads for such hardware, identify computationally burdensome subroutines, map this to appropriate hardware accelerators, and perform cross-platform benchmarking on prototype hardware or emulators of such hardware.

This role will collaborate heavily with an international multi-disciplinary team of machine learning experts, software developers, photonic/(analog/mixed-signal) electronic device and circuit designers, and computer scientists.

In our team, all the software related to design, measurement, and data analysis is written in Python; hence, a strong background with Python is critical.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Groundbreaking research experience related to architectures in emerging neuromorphic computing, quantum computing, or equivalent emerging hardware platforms and corresponding algorithm/hardware co-design.
  • Stellar publication record in top peer-reviewed journals in your field is a plus.
  • Team player, self-motivated, and independent worker.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Expertise in recent machine learning techniques, architecture, and micro-architecture design.
  • Proficiency in circuit design tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre, with experience in schematic capture, layout tools, and post-layout simulations to design and simulate analog and mixed-signal circuits and systems.
  • Familiarity and exposure to emerging NVMs (ReRAMs, FeFETs, etc.) and memory devices with a solid understanding of CMOS circuit modeling and trade-offs.
  • Experience with lab testing, experimental measurements, and post-silicon validation.
  • Experience with chip tape-outs is a plus.
  • Expert in Python coding; specifically, PyTorch and TensorFlow expertise is relevant.
  • Experience with programming GPUs and FPGAs is relevant.
  • Experience with cycle-accurate hardware simulators such as SST is a plus.

Additional Skills:

Accountability, Active Learning, Active Listening, Bias, Business Growth, Client Expectations Management, Coaching, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Cross-Functional Teamwork, Customer Centric Solutions, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Design Thinking, Empathy, Follow-Through, Growth Mindset, Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Intellectual Curiosity, Long Term Planning, Managing Ambiguity, Process Improvements, Product Services, Relationship Building

What We Can Offer You:

In November 2015, a new industry leading Fortune 500 company was launched: Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

HP split itself into two companies, HP Inc. and HPE. HP Inc. is made up of its PC and printing businesses. And HPE is comprising HP's enterprise hardware, software and services businesses. With the name Hewlett Packard Enterprise the company carries a rich legacy, where it builds on the past and creates a brand that supports the business it’s today and projects what it will be in the future.

On the 1st of April 2017 HPE completed the spin-merge of their Enterprise services part together with CSC to the new company DXC technology. And in September 2017 also the Software part will spin-merge with Micro Focus into the world’s largest pure-play enterprise infrastructure software company. The spin-merges unlock a stronger, more focused HPE, well positioned to compete and win in today’s rapidly changing market.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise helps customers make their mark on the world with cutting-edge technology solutions.
