Are you a researcher in Mathematical Statistics? Are you interested in working in a collaborative environment to provide an excellent mathematics education to our students and to develop an internationally leading research programme? Please apply.

Your Role

We are seeking a new colleague who is passionate about scientific research and education in the field of Mathematical Statistics. The offered position is at assistant professor level. Our department is looking for a mathematician with a strong research profile and proven expertise in Mathematical Statistics, as witnessed by an excellent track record of publications. While advancing fundamental research, you will also contribute to teaching and supervision across our educational programmes. The Department of Mathematics offers programmes in Mathematics and Business Analytics, and is actively involved in service teaching to other departments within the Faculty of Science.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can bridge the gap between theory and practice. In addition to developing and delivering high-quality teaching, you will play a key role in connecting our students and research to the world outside academia. Examples include supervising Business Analytics students in applied projects with industry partners, initiating collaborations with external organisations, and fostering links that enrich both education and research.

Our department is an inclusive and interdisciplinary community where diversity and international engagement are central to both our research and teaching. We warmly welcome candidates who share these values and who are eager to contribute to our collaborative environment.

The preferred starting date is 1 September 2026 or earlier.

Your Duties

  • Develop a (partially) application-driven research line in Mathematical Statistics
  • Contribute to the teaching of the department, at both the undergraduate and graduate level
  • Show academic leadership, nationally and internationally
  • Participate in departmental activities and tasks, including writing grant proposals

Your Profile

  • PhD in mathematics or statistics with a few years of postdoctoral experience (inside or outside academia)
  • Strong research programme, as witnessed by excellent publications, original research projects, and an international network
  • Interest in connecting research and education to the world outside academia
  • Effective lecturer
  • Good communication and execution skills
  • Fluent in English
  • Basic teaching qualification (‘BKO’), as required by Dutch universities, or equivalent. If not, willingness to obtain this qualification

What We Offer

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. The appointment of Assistant Professor is initially for 18 months and leads into a permanent contract. After a positive evaluation at the end of the first year, based on transparent criteria, the initial contract will be converted to a permanent position. Furthermore, a 5-year career track from Assistant Professor 2 (scale 11; UD2) to Assistant Professor 1 (scale 12; UD1) is offered.

Based on full-time employment, and depending on experience, the gross monthly salary ranges from €4728 to €7297 in accordance with Dutch academic salary scale 11, or 12. The job profile (Assistant professor or “Universitair docent”) is based on the Dutch university job ranking system and the position is available for 0.8-1.0 FTE.

Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • Contribution to commuting expenses
  • A maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment
  • Good paid parental leave scheme
  • Flexible working hours
