Internship: Concept Stage Next-Gen Rotorcraft Handling Qualities Assessment

Job description

Background

As part of the NATO Next-Gen Rotorcraft Capability Study, NLR has assisted industry in the concept design of a new military transport tiltrotor in terms of control law development, handling qualities assessment, and the offline evaluation of Nap-of-the-Earth (NOE) flight agility and shipboard operating limitations. This internship is intended to build on the tools and models developed, further extending and verifying the analyses results obtained thus far.

Assignment

  • Integrate existing Simulink control laws with nonlinear FLIGHTLAB model;
  • Gain tuning, HQ assessment & sensitivity study using CONDUIT against ADS-33E/F metrics;
  • Offline NOE slalom simulations for agility assessment;
  • Improve qLPV modelling for BattleLab simulations.

Result

The results will feed back into the industry design loop and will be input for a publication planned for the VFS Forum in 2026.

Duration

Min. 3 months, starting as soon as possible.

Profile

  • Master student Aerospace Engineering;
  • Preferably background in control & simulation;
  • Experience with tiltrotors or helicopters is a plus;
  • Pro-active and assertive.
