We are looking for a Principal Progression Designer to design, own, and evolve progression systems. In this role, you will be responsible for building and maintaining progression systems that support player engagement, fairness, and long-term motivation in an online environment.

You will operate as a hands-on individual contributor within the Design Department, owning complex progression systems end-to-end and driving design initiatives within your domain. Overall game direction is set by Directors; this role focuses on high-quality execution, system ownership, and cross-team collaboration.

What You Will Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain progression systems for a multiplayer online game, including XP, levels, ranks, unlocks, rewards, perks, and seasonal progression.
  • Own progression pacing across onboarding, mid-game, and long-term play.
  • Identify and solve progression-related problems such as pacing issues, reward clarity, fairness, or player drop-off.
  • Iterate on progression systems using playtests, telemetry, and player feedback.
  • Collaborate closely with combat, economy, social, UX, engineering, and live ops teams to ensure progression systems integrate cleanly with the broader online experience.
  • Clearly document progression systems, constraints, and tuning values so they are understandable and maintainable by others.
  • Support live tuning, updates, and adjustments as needed.

Who You Are

  • Professional experience designing progression systems for multiplayer, online, or live service games.
  • Shipped at least one multiplayer or online title with persistent progression.
  • Strong understanding of player motivation, reward structures, and pacing in online environments.
  • Experience with data-driven tuning, balance iteration, and telemetry analysis.
  • Comfortable owning complex systems independently and collaborating across disciplines.
  • Clear communicator who can explain complex systems to both design and non-design partners.

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong systems thinking with attention to player experience and fairness.
  • A pragmatic, execution-focused mindset grounded in iteration and feedback.
  • Ability to take ownership of features and see them through from concept to live operation.
  • Willingness to support and mentor peers through reviews and shared problem-solving.
  • Comfort working within an established creative direction while contributing thoughtful solutions.
