What’s it like to be a marketing intern at a global FMCG giant? We spoke with Danielle van der Zwet about her two internships at Henkel, her professional and personal growth, and her advice for students eager to break into the marketing world.

Two exciting internships in FMCG marketing

Danielle is wrapping up her studies in International Business at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. She’s currently interning at Henkel, managing the social media accounts for Schwarzkopf Professional Direct. With nearly 150 years in the game, Henkel produces a wide range of products, from hair care to detergents and adhesives.

Danielle chose Henkel because the internship promised to be challenging. “I was drawn in by how many products I recognized from their portfolio. I really liked my first internship in e-commerce, so I came back for a second internship as a social media marketer.”

A day in the life of a marketing Intern at Henkel

As a social media marketer, Danielle has many responsibilities. “From designing posts to publishing them, and from monitoring engagement to responding to comments—there’s never a dull moment.” Given the importance of measurable outcomes in marketing, she keeps a keen eye on the engagement statistics and creates monthly reports.

“Thanks to my experience at Henkel, I feel equipped to excel in my career.”

As an intern, she also helps write newsletters and collaborates closely with the sales team. “At Henkel, teamwork is key. Everyone is willing to lend a hand, which inspires me to make the most of my experience. The challenges I face help me develop new skills, making each day exciting and rewarding.”

Danielle’s professional and personal growth

Danielle sees Henkel as the ideal place to learn the ins and outs of marketing while also enhancing her soft skills. “I’ve gained so much insight into effective communication, and I feel much more comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone. That can be quite tough as an intern, but I’ve learned not to shy away from taking risks.”

The culture at Henkel encourages Danielle to voice her opinions and ask questions, even to her manager. “That’s been a crucial part of my growth. It’ll definitely help me when I start applying for my first marketing role.” As for her plans after the internship, she’s still figuring it out. “But thanks to my experience at Henkel, I feel equipped to excel in my career.”

Danielle’s tips for future marketing interns

When we ask Danielle for advice for future interns, she had some solid insights: “Your colleagues are there to support you, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. Also, make an effort to network with colleagues in different departments. Henkel is a big company, and there are plenty of opportunities.”

Her most important piece of advice? Enjoy the experience. “Henkel is an awesome place to work, so make the most of your internship. Be proactive, keep pushing yourself, and you’ll do great!”
