About the team

At our headquarters in Hengelo the System Engineering department is responsible for the entire development cycle of our products, services and solutions, consisting of concept definition, system design, system integration and validation.

Navy vessels are designed to operate in high-threat environments. These threats are becoming faster, more maneuverable, and more complex. Anti-ship missiles go three to five times faster than the speed of sound, with increasingly complex behavior. At the same time the possibilities of modern navy vessels to counter threats are also expanding. When several of these threats come up against them simultaneously, it becomes increasingly difficult for human operators to take efficient and effective protection measures. To aid the crew in effectively combatting these threats at the right time in the right manner, and thus ultimately improve their chance of survival, Thales is developing the Above Water Warfare System (AWWS). AWWS is an integration of a Fire Control System and several sensors and effectors.

System Engineers working on AWWS are part of a multi-site team in Hengelo and in Delft. To strengthen our teams, we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated System Engineer.

About your future job

In your job as System Engineer you will work as an integral part of a project team which is responsible for the design, development and validation of an AWWS for a specific customer; starting from the bid phase up to the acceptance phase. Together with the lead engineer and project team, you analyse and manage Customer requirements. You work on the system model and system design by using Model Based System Engineering (MBSE). You bring your particular expertise into the project and interface with the lead engineer of the project, representatives of the customer, suppliers of subsystems and other parties involved.

In addition, you may be involved in other activities within the Thales organisation, such as process improvement and/or product expertise/roadmap definition.

Your main tasks are:

  • Understanding and managing Customer requirements
  • Contributing to system modeling and design through MBSE
  • Providing solutions to technical questions from internal/external stakeholders
  • Building up and maintaining the knowledge base of subsystems
  • Taking leadership to build your own multi-site network within Thales

Why you’d be a good match

We are looking for a new colleague who:

  • possesses a BSc or MSc degree in electrical engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering or similar field
  • has, at least, five years experience in system engineering
  • is a generalist with a broad interest in technology
  • has good communication skills towards internal and external stakeholders
  • possesses a good level of initiative, pragmatism and persuasiveness
  • is fluent in spoken and written English and Dutch, or is willing to learn Dutch
  • is flexible with respect to business trips to stakeholders in The Netherlands and abroad

What's in it for you

  • A challenging job in a great team within our high-tech, innovative work environment. Includes the freedom for initiative and good ideas.
  • Room for personal and professional growth within our organisation, for example in regards to technical, commercial or international skills.
  • Valuable international collaboration with coworkers from 68 different countries around the globe.
  • A comfortable work space in a modern environment, with a focus on flexibility and the right work life balance.
  • You can usually work where and whenever you want. Within Thales, we aim for a 60/40 balance, where you work from home at least two days a week, when your role allows this.
  • A good salary, fitting travel allowance, and the ability to personalise your employment conditions: for instance, you can trade PTO for internet costs, our bicycle plan, company fitness and relocation costs.
  • 40 days off per year (PTO). No, really.

With 80.000 talents working in 68 countries, we are one of the biggest high-tech employers in the field of safety and security. In the Netherlands, where 2500 employees are based, we are located in four cities: Huizen, Delft, Eindhoven and Hengelo (HQ).
Do you want to kickstart your career in an international high-tech environment? And are you looking for a traineeship where you can develop your personal skills? Our traineeship starts in October 2023. Check www.thalestraineeship.nl
