Platform Engineer (Distributed Data Stores)

Adyen is the financial technology platform of choice, offering a comprehensive solution encompassing payments, data, and financial products for renowned customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. We value ambition and strive to engineer for it, creating an environment filled with opportunities and a supportive culture to allow our people to truly own their careers. The individuals at Adyen are driven, tackling unique technical challenges at scale and solving them as a team. Together, we deliver innovative, ethical solutions that enable businesses to achieve their ambitions faster.

Adyen is in search of a Platform Engineer for our NoSQL team with a strong background in Python or Go to join our team in Amsterdam. Our platforms are scaling rapidly, and you will play a critical role in developing, optimizing, and scaling distributed data systems that power our core services.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of software engineering, database administration, and infrastructure operations. You’ll be responsible for both building the tools that manage our data and the underlying infrastructure that keeps our clusters running. You will collaborate with engineers across teams to manage and enhance distributed data stores such as Cassandra, Elasticsearch, and Redis, while helping us explore new service offerings such as Clickhouse. You will help to design partitioning and clustering strategies, improve system performance, and ensure high availability for globally distributed services.

What you’ll do

  • Develop robust tooling and automation using Python or Go to manage, scale, and monitor distributed data stores.
  • Design, build, and optimize distributed data stores to ensure scalability, fault tolerance, and high availability.
  • Develop and implement data partitioning, clustering, and sharding strategies for large-scale global systems.
  • Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of distributed systems.
  • Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks and work on mission critical systems to ensure availability in production environments.

Who You Are

  • Experience working with distributed data stores like Cassandra, Redis, Clickhouse, or similar technologies.
  • Solid programming experience with Python or Go, with a track record of building reliable infrastructure automation and developer tooling.
  • Familiar with partitioning, replication, consistency models, and CAP theorem. Familiar with data distribution strategies like sharding and consistent hashing.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in large-scale, production environments with distributed systems.
  • You are a proactive problem solver, willing to take ownership of challenges. A team player with a strong desire to learn and improve continuously.
  • Develop and maintain tools and libraries for managing different distributed data stores, automating routine tasks, and ensuring consistent deployment practices.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation once or twice a month, responding to and resolving urgent issues to maintain system stability and minimize downtime.

This role is based out of our Amsterdam office. We are an office-first company and value in-person collaboration; we do not offer remote-only roles.

We took an unobvious approach to starting a payments company, building a platform from scratch. Today, we're the payments platform of choice for the world's brightest companies. Our unobvious approach is a product of our diverse perspectives. This diversity, of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, is essential in helping us maintain our momentum.
