Are you passionate about teaching in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and/or Computational Sciences? And do you want to help educate the next generation of AI, CS or Computational Sciences experts using innovative teaching methods?

We are looking for five colleagues who are passionate about education in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and/or Computational Sciences. Our department wants to attract junior lecturers who can strengthen our teaching staff by delivering high-quality education. You will support the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in AI, the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Computer Science, and/or the Master's programme in Computational Sciences.

Your function

As a junior lecturer, you will be involved in various teaching-related and organizational activities across (some of) these programmes, with a special focus on course innovation. You will contribute to the further implementation of the principle of "active blended learning" in our programmes.

As a junior lecturer, you will be encouraged to work on educational innovation and build a teaching portfolio as preparation for various career paths. To support this, you will have the opportunity to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) for university teaching. The junior lecturer position is ideally suited for early-career teachers. You will work closely with, and be supported by, many enthusiastic and experienced colleagues.

Expected tasks

  • Support teachers in individual courses in AI, CS, and/or Comp. Science education programmes;
  • Revise and improve course materials, e.g. setup of practical sessions;
  • Coordinate and coach student assistants;
  • Supervise/coordinate bachelor's and/or master's thesis projects;
  • Provide technical and organisational assistance for project-oriented courses;
  • Advise on and help with the further development of innovative teaching concepts;
  • Provide organisational assistance in education-related events.

Your profile

  • have completed a Master's in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computational Sciences, or a related Master's programme;
  • be enthusiastic about teaching;
  • have strong oral and written communication skills in English;
  • possess good organizational skills;
  • be proactive and able to work independently.

Desired areas of expertise

We are looking for junior teachers with different profiles and expertise for our different educational programmes. Among others, we seek candidates with a strong background in the following areas:

  • Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Data Mining;
  • Programming;
  • Parallel programming and High-Performance Computing;
  • Scientific computing, Numerical methods, and Numerical Linear Algebra.

We realise that each individual brings a unique set of skills, expertise and mindset. Therefore we are happy to invite anyone who recognises themselves in the profile, even if you do not meet all the requirements.

What do we offer?

A challenging position in a socially engaged organization that is ideally suited for early-career teachers. At VU Amsterdam, you contribute to education, research, and services for a better world.

  • A full Junior Lecturer Trajectory. This concerns a temporary appointment of 50 months in total, including a period of probation of 2 months. This position does not lead to permanent employment;
  • A minimum gross monthly salary of €3.546 and a maximum of €5.538 (salary scale 10), based on full-time employment. This is based on UFO-profile Teacher 4. Your exact salary will depend on your education and experience;
