Getting the heat out of highly integrated electrical systems.

Job description

Thermal management in highly integrated systems like high-performance computing and communication arrays is a large challenge in the electronics industry. When temperature of devices increases their lifetime reduces and thermal throttling can reduce performance. In highly integrated systems, the volume of material to transport heat is reduced which requires innovations for effective heat management. Improving the materials used is one of the methods that can be employed for this. Especially nanomaterials are of interest here, as they can potentially outperform bulk materials.

In this project at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS), which is part of the growth fund POLARIS, you will investigate innovative nanomaterial solutions for thermal management. The application of the material can be as thermal interface material or by enabling other heat dissipation pathways. As part of the research, you will synthesize the materials in the EKL cleanroom, create test structures and validate their thermal performance and other relevant material properties.

The research will take place in the Electronic Components, Technology and Materials section of the Microelectronics Department. Within the consortium, other academic, research and industrial partners are also present, with opportunities to collaborate.

Job requirements

  • You hold a MSc in electrical engineering, materials science, applied physics or other relevant fields.
  • Prior experience in cleanroom processing and/or thermal or material analysis is highly recommended.

TU Delft (Delft University of Technology)

Working at TU Delft means contributing to solutions that really make a difference.

At TU Delft, people make the difference. With their knowledge and curiosity, staff provide high-quality education and conduct pioneering research that extends beyond the campus. You will have the opportunity to take the initiative, work with others, and grow as a professional. Working at TU Delft means joining an international community of professionals and students.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology used in daily life. The faculty offers plenty of room for ground-breaking research, educates innovative engineers, and has excellent labs and facilities that underline its strong international position.

Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5 year contract includes an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming performance requirements are met.

As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.

TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
