Global Accounting Officer at SNV

SNV is seeking a proactive finance professional with a collaborative mindset to join its Global Accounting Support Team within the Global Finance department, based in The Hague, the Netherlands. The Global Accounting Team plays an essential role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of SNV’s financial data across all operations. This includes developing, implementing, and maintaining financial policies, improving accounting and administrative processes within the ERP system (SAP Business by Design), and ensuring compliance with Dutch GAAP.

SNV is a global development partner operating in more than 20 countries in Africa and Asia with approximately 1,600 colleagues. The organisation works to strengthen capacities and catalyse partnerships in agri-food, energy, and water systems.

For this role, you need to be eligible to work in the Netherlands. SNV cannot sponsor a work visa.

As a Global Accounting Officer, your role will involve providing expert guidance and support to assigned country finance teams, driving continuous improvements in financial processes, and ensuring adherence to global accounting standards, while contributing to SNV’s mission.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide tailored advice and hands-on support to country finance teams on financial accounting processes, project accounting, and financial administration.
  • Analyse financial data to produce accurate, timely reports. Oversee monthly, extensive, and year-end close assessments, performing thorough checks on transactions and reconciliations where needed. Follow up with Country Finance Managers on findings or outstanding items during reviews.
  • Support the global audit process by delivering high-quality audit materials on time and reviewing deliverables from country teams. Provide coaching and guidance to ensure audit readiness.
  • Review financial balances for assigned countries and take corrective actions as necessary. Lead initiatives to clear balance sheets, assess data quality, and implement improvements.
  • Identify gaps in financial administration, accounting, and reporting processes. Propose and implement solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy, and data quality, including the use of AI-supported data analysis to review centrally consolidated data, support assessments, and strengthen reporting.
  • Coordinate periodic assessments of financial provisions for accounts receivable, accounts payable, and taxes, proactively identifying risks and supporting mitigation actions.
  • Develop and deliver instructions and training materials to strengthen the capabilities of country finance teams and foster continuous learning and improvement.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive financial accounting guidelines, including instructions for month-end, extensive, and year-end closes. Develop tools and reports to ensure consistent, compliant accounting practices across the organisation.

Qualifications

You are a team player with a talent for sharing and transferring knowledge across diverse country teams, ensuring that high standards are consistently upheld while fostering a supportive and knowledgeable team environment. You excel at building strong relationships with country finance teams, listening attentively to their unique needs, and providing tailored support. Your adaptability allows you to navigate and integrate various financial systems and processes, while your commitment to promoting best practices and knowledge exchange drives continuous learning and improvement across the organisation.

To be considered, you should also bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, or equivalent experience.
  • At least three years of relevant accounting experience. Audit experience, preferably with a Big Four accounting firm, is an advantage but not required.
  • Solid expertise with periodic close and financial reporting processes of group companies, including knowledge of accounting standards. SNV applies Dutch GAAP for group financial statements.
  • Experience in financial statements preparation and hands-on experience with underlying accounting processes such as order to cash and purchase to pay.
  • Experience with reviewing or making payments, GL accounting, and the monthly close process, including clearing balance sheet items.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Dutch or French is an added advantage.
  • Working experience with IT financial systems; SAP Business by Design is preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and further develop accounting and advisory skills.
  • Proven cultural awareness while working in an international setting.

Additional information

  • Type of contract: one-year national contract, 32–36 hours a week, with possibility of extension.
  • Expected start date: September / October 2026.
  • A competitive salary package with benefits, including 240 hours of annual leave based on a full-time position of 40 hours per week, 8% holiday pay, an 8.3% year-end bonus, reimbursement of home-to-work travel costs, and participation in the ABP Pension scheme.
