Your team

You will be part of the Monetary and Economic Statistics Division in the Directorate General Statistics. Our Division develops, compiles and disseminates statistics and statistical indicators. We provide related user services regarding monetary financial institutions, other financial corporations, financial stability and financial integration within the euro area and the EU. We also produce general economic statistics, including price and cost statistics, and surveys on non-financial sectors.

You will work in the Financial Statistics Section, which is responsible for compiling payments statistics, various types of financial stability-related statistics and indicators on financial integration and financial structures, supporting the work of the ECB and the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB).

In your role as Research Analyst in the Payments Statistics team, you will work closely with users of statistics in various ECB business areas, the ESRB and beyond. You will also work closely with other teams in the Directorate General as well as statisticians from the national central banks.

Your role

As a Research Analyst in the Payments Statistics team you will:

  • contribute to the quarterly and semi-annual production of the ECB’s payments statistics, analysing country-level trends and carrying out outlier detection and data validation;
  • run, maintain and optimise the Python-based system used to produce payments statistics, understanding and efficiently navigating the intersection of business requirements and IT system solutions;
  • make a key contribution to the technical development of the IT ecosystem linked to the evolution of the Payment Services Directive and the Payment Services Regulation, proactively engaging with all relevant stakeholders;
  • help ensure statistics are fit for purpose and leverage key innovations in fields such as digitalisation, tokenisation and artificial intelligence;
  • engage and collaborate with other divisions within the Directorate General, other business areas in the ECB and national central banks, responding to queries from internal and external users;
  • contribute to the meetings of the ESCB Statistics Committee’s Working Groups.

For this role we are seeking candidates with a strong technical background, who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate(s) in their development of the required skills.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to produce and develop statistics and statistical indicators that inform policymaking in a leading central bank. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

We actively support professional development for our staff. Besides learning opportunities such as training and mentoring, we encourage and support horizontal mobility after some years in the same position.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, banking, finance, business administration, data science, computer science, mathematics or another relevant field;
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of two years’ experience in regular statistical production, market infrastructure or payments-related data management, time series analysis and/or data quality assessment;
  • advanced programming skills in Python and experience in R or SQL, and proven experience in applying these skills to business processes;
  • a proven ability to analyse problems, propose solutions, summarise findings and present results;
  • experience in testing IT systems, including migrating datasets and compilation processes from one system to another;
  • the ability to explain complicated technical or conceptual issues in simple, non-technical language to different stakeholders, and to draft appropriate documentation;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • knowledge of the concepts and processes applied to market infrastructures, payments and/or payments statistics;
  • an understanding of the design and maintenance of statistical dashboards.

You engage collaboratively and proactively with others. You pursue team goals by planning and prioritising your tasks, and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
