Flexport is shaping the future of a $10T industry with solutions powered by innovative technology and exceptional people. Companies of all sizes — from emerging brands to Fortune 500s — use Flexport technology to move more than $19B of merchandise across 112 countries a year. The recent global supply chain crisis has put Flexport center stage as it continues to play a pivotal role in how goods move around the world.

Engineering Manager

About the Role

  • The PSI (Platform, Security & Infrastructure) team builds the paved path and tooling that hundreds of engineers worldwide rely on every day to ship. Each element of the team reinforces the others: platform, security, and infrastructure working in close concert to make the right thing the easy and secure thing.
  • Flexport is building out a PSI hub in Amsterdam, focusing on the Platform element.
  • You will be the primary driver of the platform roadmap. You are the person who identifies the highest-leverage problems, proposes the strategy, and owns execution.

What You'll Do

  • Own the developer platform roadmap. You are the primary idea generator. You identify what's slowing engineers down, what's highest-leverage to fix, and what the platform needs to look like in 12–18 months. You will drive prioritization and expect to be largely trusted on those calls.
  • Lead a team of platform engineers building and evolving the tools, systems, and paved paths that hundreds of product engineers rely on every day: CI/CD pipelines, build tooling, developer experience, and observability.
  • Stay close to the ground. You dogfood the platform, run developer interviews, and bring firsthand product instincts to every prioritization decision. You know what engineers actually need because you are regularly in conversation with them.
  • Drive execution. You are hands-on enough to engage directly with the hard problems, review technical designs with genuine depth, and help your team find the right solutions.
  • Contribute to company-wide planning, cross-team decisions, and the long-term strategy of the combined platform, security, and infrastructure organization.
  • Help build the Amsterdam engineering culture: hiring, onboarding, team rituals, and the day-to-day environment that makes engineers want to do their best work.

You Should Have

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time building developer platforms, internal tooling, or infrastructure that other engineers depend on
  • 3+ years as an engineering manager, including experience owning a technical roadmap with high autonomy
  • Deep technical expertise in modern developer platform work: CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions preferred), container orchestration (Kubernetes preferred), build tooling across multiple languages, API gateway and service communication patterns (GraphQL, gRPC), IAM, and observability
  • Strong product instincts applied to internal users — a track record of identifying the right problems to solve, not just executing a backlog that someone else built
  • Experience managing in a distributed, multinational engineering organization. You communicate clearly across time zones, build trust without constant in-person contact, and stay closely aligned with remote leadership
  • Excellent communication. You can write a clear strategy doc, run a productive design review, and represent your team's work credibly to senior leadership and cross-functional partners

Nice to Have

  • Experience in data-driven DevX development using metrics such as DORA
  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience with Terraform
  • Prior experience managing engineers in the Netherlands or broader EU employment contexts

How We Work

  • In Amsterdam we come to the office 3 times a week to hang out, whiteboard, and ship together
  • We stay closely aligned with our coworkers on other continents. This role requires genuine availability for overlap with engineers around the world.
  • We have the latest hardware and software, including frontier AI models on day one
  • We're agile, but not dogmatic. Teams decide how they work best

Why This Role Is Special

  • Massive leverage: the platform you build is multiplied across hundreds of engineers and thousands of deploys a day
  • Real autonomy: you will be trusted to set the direction for platform engineering, not execute someone else's backlog
  • You are building something: the skeleton of this team is in place already, you will build the rest

What's in it for you

  • An opportunity to contribute to one of the fastest-growing companies, where you'll have the chance to create a global impact while being a part of a thriving multinational environment
  • Daily catered lunches including vegetarian options, breakfast, snacks, and soft drinks available in our office on a daily basis
  • Commute expenses: Flexport will cover home-office commuting costs for employees living outside of Amsterdam
  • 25 working days of vacation based on full-time employment
  • Health insurance: Flexport offers a collective health insurance plan including a basic package and any available additional packages. Your monthly premium is fully paid by Flexport.
  • A defined pension contribution scheme
  • Equity program: every team member becomes a shareholder, aligning our success with yours. As a private company in a multi-trillion dollar industry, you have a direct stake in our collective growth and success.
  • Employee Assistance Program through Aetna Resources for Living: provided at no cost to you and your household members
  • Parental leave benefit: our parental leave program allows both mothers and partners to take time off for pregnancy, childbirth, and bonding with your new child
